Lombardi: No cardinal believes in changing Church doctrine

2014-02-20

The Vatican spokesperson explained what the Pope and 150 cardinals discussed, during their first closed-door session.

Fr. Federico Lombardi said German Cardinal Walter Kasper spoke for about two hours, taking up most of the time in the first session. In his speech, he explained that these sessions will help the cardinals understand the challenges that families face today, and not to discuss changing Church doctrine.

FR. FEDERICO LOMBARDI
Vatican Spokesperson
"Cardinal Kasper said it well: Here, our efforts are not to redefine Church doctrine. We are all aware of this, and no one thinks we should change the doctrine. Our efforts, he said, are to go back to the roots of the doctrine itself, which is the Gospel.”

Lombardi said the cardinal did not talk about specific cases or examples. But he explained how the cardinals should approach thorny issues like marriage and divorce during these sessions.

FR. FEDERICO LOMBARDI
Vatican Spokesperson
"It comes down to balancing loyalty to Christ's words and mercy; to understanding God's mercy in a person's life, and therefore in the Church's pastoral work.”

Pope Francis called on the cardinals to help prepare the Synod on the family taking place in October.

The reflection process is expected to be long, and take up to two years to complete.
