More primary and secondary school students in Moldova have a stronger preference for English as a foreign language than for any other languages taught. Moldova’s National Bureau for Statistics revealed that over 60% of students study English as their primary foreign language, whereas French is less preferred. Less than 50% of students study French as their primary foreign language in school.

The Moldovan educational system allows the students to choose between several languages, usually English, French and German. However, German language is not very spread throughout the country since there is a shortage of teachers specialized in this language. The students studying in cities are usually the most privileged, as more professors are available.

Russian language is being taught as a mandatory subject from the 5th grade. Therefore, the students are bilingual by the time they graduate high school.

English became the most popular foreign language in Moldova as it became the international language and many employers require proficiency in English.
