"Country Roads" To Become Fourth Official West Virginia State Songfrom Eyewitness News Online Reported: Mar. 7, 2014 1:33 PM EST Updated: Mar. 7, 2014 1:50 PM EST
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – “Country Roads” has taken a lot of people home back to the Mountain State, particularly when they have been driving in their car and singing along to that tune on the radio.
Now the John Denver classic song, “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” is about to be named as another official state song. West Virginia already has several official state songs. "The West Virginia Hills," "West Virginia, My Home Sweet Home" and "This Is My West Virginia" were all officially adopted by the Legislature back in 1963, the year of West Virginia's centennial celebration. On Friday, the state Senate will add another, "Take Me Home, Country roads." A special resolution will make Denver’s hit West Virginia's fourth official state song. Denver co-wrote the song, along with Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert. A reception is scheduled for this afternoon at two in the lower rotunda of the capitol to mark the occasion. Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin will be there, with musical performances from the Appalachian Children's Chorus and Cabell Midland High School, along with a few surprise guests. Bob Denver's widow, Dreama Denver, has been a driving force to have "Take Me Home, Country Roads" recognized. The Princeton resident has been working with lawmakers to get the resolution introduced before this year's session ends Saturday. MORE NEWS FROM EYEWITNESS NEWS
