Since the protests against President Bashar al-Assad in March 2011 descended into a bitter and bloody civil war more than 140,000 people have been killed, hundreds of thousands of people displaced and much of the country now lies in ruins. Multiple rebel groups across the country continue to fight President Assad's forces using any weapons they can get their hands on.
