The Edmonton Journal will no longer publish an edition on Sundays after June 24, parent company Postmedia announced Monday.

Postmedia cited a need to cut costs in its announcement. The Ottawa Citizen and Calgary Herald will also cease publishing on Sundays.

The Journal will end publication of its printed TV listings supplement after June 8.

'The newspaper industry worldwide is facing widespread challenges as reader and advertising habits evolve and competition online increases," publisher John Connolly said in a letter to readers.

"The unprecedented pace of those changes has led us to make some difficult decisions."

Editor-in-chief Lucinda Chodan said the paper plans to cut staff and the company will offer voluntary buyouts to some employees.

The Journal may also change how the newspaper is distributed outside of Edmonton.
