AJ+ Fellowship Program

Deadline: August 1, 2014

Psyched about AJ+? Then you’re the type who knows there’s always more to the story. Here’s more to ours: the AJ+ Fellowship Program.

We’re on the hunt for six seriously stellar young people from around the globe to make up our first class of AJ+ Fellows.

It’s a one-year gig, it’s paid, and it’s an opportunity unlike anything else, an opportunity to be at the heart of the next generation of storytellers. Throughout the year, you’ll work with and learn from our core AJ+ team. You’ll join us in our adventure as we introduce AJ+ to the world, and you’ll be a valuable part of making sure this introduction unfolds with fireworks.

But before we get into it further, let’s see if you’re AJ+ Fellow material . . .

Does this sound like you?

You’re passionate about empowerment and a wizard on social media. You’re on top of all the big news stories, but you’re just as sharply tuned in to the micro-conversations happening across your region that aren’t making headlines.

You can identify and effectively interact with a range of influencers across your region. You can write a punchy tweet, and you can engage people in and help drive a substantive conversation online. Plus, you can crack a joke now and then.

You don’t need a PhD or decades of experience. You don’t even need a gazillion Twitter followers. But you do have to be downright obsessed with the news and trends in your region and – just as importantly – with the pursuit of unearthing untold stories. You’ll also ideally have some experience under your belt that shows us you can do the job, whether that’s activism, reporting, blogging or something else altogether.

Still interested?

Awesome. Here are the nuts and bolts. We’re looking for one person from each of the following regions:

  • North America
  • Latin America
  • Europe
  • MENA
  • Sub-Saharan Africa
  • Asia

You’ll spend 2-3 weeks with us in San Francisco, then head back home and work remotely from there.

But don’t think ‘working from home’ means kicking back. For your entire region, you’re our eyes and ears on the ground, and you’ll be in daily contact with us here in San Francisco. This is full-time and full on. It’s also an incredible opportunity to sharpen skills, work with a brilliant team, and be in a position that permits you to empower and give voice to others.

Here are just five things you’ll be up to

  1. Tracking trends online and on the ground across your region
  2. Moderating digital discussions to keep things in line when opinions turn to shouts
  3. Pitching fresh angles and stories from your region to our teams in SF
  4. Encouraging folks in your region to engage with AJ+
  5. Working and bonding with your five fellow Fellows to help us roll out AJ+ around the globe in style

Now what?

  1. Step 1: Fill out this form
  2. Step 2:Shoot us one Tweet at @AJPlus telling us why you’re #Fellow material
  3. Step 3: Send your CV here: AJPlus-Fellows@aljazeera.net (please indicate the region for which you're applying in the subject line)

I’m still in university/can’t commit to a year-long, full-time job right now. Will I have the opportunity to apply next year?
Yes - with the caveat that nothing is guaranteed in the bananas world of new media, we are indeed planning to make this a yearly fellowship.
The Asia-Pacific region is massive! Can you please split it into two regions?
Short answer: no. And you’re right, it’s a really, really big piece of turf to cover. It’s all about networking, folks --- covering this region is a tall order, but with solid online acumen and the support of your five other Fellows, it’s totally doable.
How much will I get paid?
You’ll be paid just fine, don’t worry! We’ll get into the details on that front in later stages of the application process. But rest assured that we’re treating this as full-time job and you’ll be paid accordingly.
Do I get to live in San Francisco?
Nope, but you will get to spend a chunk of time out here training and getting to know the team. After that, you’ll head back to your home region and work from there. You’ll be in daily contact (at minimum!) with us here at HQ.
I’m based in XYZ region, but I want to apply for the Fellow position that covers ABC region. Can I do this?
Nope, sorry. We’re glad you’re highly knowledgeable about regions around the world --- keep it up and engage with AJ+ for a robust conversation on global issues! But you need to be actually based in and living in the region for which you’re applying to be a Fellow.
But I don’t use Twitter. Do I have to fulfill step 2 of the application process?
Deft usage and navigation of Twitter is actually a big part of the job. You’ll need mastery of this domain in order to track trends and engage with folks in your region (we’ll help you hone these skills in training and throughout the year, but you’ll need a decent grasp of this to start with). You don’t have to be a Twitter superstar, but if you don’t use Twitter already, you’ll need it to do the job --- not just to fulfill step 2 of the application.
