Teachers union backs Eric Garcetti for mayor

The Los Angeles Teachers Union voted late Wednesday to endorse Eric Garcetti for mayor and Mike Feuer for city attorney in the March 5 primary election.

The House of Representatives for United Teachers Los Angeles voted 146-12 to support Garcetti, who is running against a slate of candidates including Controller Wendy Greuel, attorney Kevin James, Councilwoman Jan Perry and former technology executive Emanuel Pleitez.

"We look forward to working with Eric Garcetti as mayor," UTLA President Warren Fletcher said in a statement. "He listens to teachers. He understands the importance of our expertise and our commitment to educating students."

The UTLA vote came a day after six locals of the Service Employees International Union failed to reach a consensus on whether to back Garcetti, a city councilman, or Greuel, the city controller, to succeed Antonio Villaraigosa as mayor.
