When Helene's mirror drawings started appearing in fashion magazines, style websites and newspapers around the world, Helene Meldahl realised what had started out as just "doodling on the mirror with lipstick" and taking a quick camera-phone snap to amuse friends, had become something bigger that had captured the collective consciousness of selfie lovers around the world.

"It makes me happy when people like my drawings. It has been both amazing and surprising to see my selfies being posted in articles, newspapers and blogs all over the world," said Helene to The Local.

The 26-year-old sociology graduate of Stavanger University now lives and works between both Norway and the US. She currently runs her own design consultancy in Washington DC and has produced hundreds of selfies or - as she calls them - "mirrorsme" designs.
But why are we all so 'selfie'-obsessed today?
"We all want recognition for who we are. Everyone wants to be seen and that’s only human. The selfie gives us a unique chance of documenting our lives and what we do, and who we meet. We get to tell our story the way we want,” replied Helene.
The Local selected our favourite "mirrorsme" selfies and asked Helene to explain the story behind each picture.
