Slovakia has joined other European Union states seeking to provide help for displaced civilians in northern Iraq amid the ongoing sectarian fighting in the region, the  country’s foreign ministry said Thursday.
The eastern EU state will start its aid on a small scale by donating €20,000 to the International Organization for Migration, which has already been active in the Kurdish part of Iraq, the foreign ministry said.
The humanitarian assistance comes as several other EU states, including Slovakia’s neighbor the Czech Republic, are preparing to deliver weapons to Iraqi and Kurdish forces seeking to thwart the expansion of Islamic State, the Sunni militant group, that has taken control of large areas of northern Iraq.
“In the wake of ongoing ethnic, sectarian and religious violence used against members of (non-Islamic) minorities in northern Iraq by extremists from the Islamic State group, there’s a humanitarian crisis in the region,” the foreign ministry said.
Earlier this month Slovakia made a similar donation to aid agencies active in helping civilians who have lost their homes in the Gaza strip, after the Israeli forces advanced into the area to prevent Palestinian fighters from firing rockets at Israel.
