This week brought some notable farewells. First, Charlo Greene, a 26-year-old TV reporter in Alaska, won the Internet when she dropped the f-bomb on air and quit her job to work full-time on marijuana reform (she pulled off a rare viral double play when, during an interview on HuffPost Live, she smoked a joint). Making a less theatrical but far more significant exit, Eric Holder announced he is resigning as Attorney General. Of course, Holder has agreed to remain in his post until his successor is confirmed by the Senate -- so, given the current state of D.C. dysfunction, he may be AG for some time to come. Finally, after a series of violent nightmares, the sports world delivered a fairy-tale ending as Derek Jeter capped his legendary career with a storybook walk-off hit in his last game at Yankee Stadium. We offer them all a sincere -- if ill-thought-out -- #LatteSalute.
Let us send a clear and unequivocal signal that failure to act will have consequences at the ballot box for politicians and for the bottom line of businesses. If leaders are unwilling to lead when leadership is required, people must.
Already the western-backed Syrian rebels are howling that they have been discredited by America's attacks in Syria.
The controversy over the Girl Scouts using cookie sales to raise funds may be nothing new, but a new arrangement with Nestlé steps way over the line in its willingness to compromise our children's health for the sake of corporate profits.
If we stop defining each other by what we are not and start defining ourselves by what we are -- can all be freer and this is what HeForShe is about.
There are two Champs-Élysées in the world. One is in Paris. It's filled with movie theaters, boutiques, markets, and fantastic restaurants. Two months ago, I found myself walking down the other Champs-Élysées, nicknamed by aid workers, in the middle of the Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan.
A good deal of the growing lack of confidence in the Supreme Court these days is due precisely to the concern that the justices are increasingly voting in ways that reflect the political values and preferences of the presidents who appointed them.
Women must be heard. Their voices and ideas can greatly contribute to finding climate solutions that work locally and culturally.
This is an emergency of enormous scale, and we all have a moral obligation to stand shoulder to shoulder to ensure its swift conclusion. Especially, as we see time and again, it is the poorest and most vulnerable that are most at risk.
It turns out that most people, regardless of nationality or set of beliefs, share similar sentiments about how much CEOs should be paid -- and, for the most part, these estimates are markedly lower than the amounts company leaders actually earn.
This week I was joined by over 500 youth advocates for education and education activists to launch the #UpForSchool petition in New York. World leaders including the United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, have backed the petition. So, too have major faith-based organizations, including the World Evangelical Alliance and Sojourners -- both members of Global Faith Coalition on Education.
We need strong laws to protect forests and people. We also need better enforcement of existing laws. While we are celebrating new announcements on paper this week, forests and forest peoples are facing imminent threats that must be averted if we want to live up to the New York Declaration.
In the beginning, I worked as a personal trainer. Despite following the rules, many of my clients couldn't ditch that stubborn weight. I knew these people weren't cheating, so I began to wonder why those rules weren't working.
Nothing better illustrates the bankruptcy of the Obama administration's foreign policy than funding groups that turn on the U.S. again and again, a neo-con fueled cycle of profits for war makers and destruction of ever-shifting "enemies."
Taking accountability for yourself and your work means accepting the good along with the bad. If you own up to your mistakes, why shouldn't you own up to your victories? Here's how to start getting over the fear of healthy self-promotion.
We truly can save the oceans and feed the world by eating more of the right types of fish and fighting for better fishery management. But in order for all this to work, consumers need to be able to find out exactly what they are buying.
Girls and women, infinitely diverse in their interests, appearance, ambition, ability, aspirations, make up more than 50 percent of the human population, but you would never know any of this watching our top grossing films. Despite decades of research, it is apparent that we are, as a culture, so used to women being marginal that we don't even notice.
If we find intelligent beings elsewhere in our galaxy, you'll not be quickly confronted with complex philosophical problems of understanding their mode of thinking or their biological blueprint -- or even knowing whether they are biological.
On the evening of June 23, a middle-aged woman walked into the emergency room of Phebe Hospital with a fever. Located in Bong County in the rural heart of Liberia, Phebe was known as one of the best hospitals in the country.
A person with an opinion and a way to project it is a powerful thing, whether that platform is Twitter or the floor of the UN. But women know that when they choose to voice such an opinion, they open themselves up to the possibility of not just vehement disagreement or critique, but violence, sexualization and threats which may or may not be empty.
Those of us in the academy should be asking ourselves what more can we do to confront one of the most urgent and consequential challenges facing our civilization.
If 150,000 U.S. troops could not stabilize Iraq in the absence of an inclusive and competent government, the limited measures on offer now simply will not suffice. And we should know by now that any Western military intervention with overtly political, rather than clearly humanitarian, objectives runs a real risk of inflaming sectarian sentiment.
In California, we have emphasized in recent years building standards and appliance standards and a renewable energy goal. But now instead of just asking how many solar installations we have or how many wind installations or geothermal, we are putting the emphasis on our climate footprint.
I firmly believe that if we started owning up to taking nude photos of ourselves, there would be a lot less stigma surrounding having and sharing them... and if we stopped thinking of nudity and sex as our enemies, we'd have a healthier, happier society.
Some exercises may not deliver the results you'd expect, and others could actually hurt you. Here are five workouts I stay away from.
In America, people with lots of money can easily avoid the consequences of bad bets and big losses by cashing out at the first sign of trouble. But workers who move to a place like Atlantic City for a job and invest in a home have no such protection.
Not a cook? Fine. But you might want to learn how to make a proper mac and cheese or try your hand at baking -- before it's too late and you have to speed to Boston Market to buy a dilapidated apple pie and sub-par side.
Bill Clinton predicted corporations would soon care less about maximizing profits and more about employees and society. Sadly, there is little to suggest that big corporations and investors have gotten the former president's message, or that executives share his fantasy. Current trends suggest the reverse.
I am part of Black America; I was born into it by virtue of the color of my skin. No matter where I am in my life, that part of me will always be my first identifier.
When most 20-somethings have dating questions, they call a single friend. A few might call their moms. But what if your "person" is a 60 guy who also happens to be your dad?
The internal dimension of the war in Syria is now probably marginal to the global and regional war raging in the country today.
