New law also covers rape and violence against children
President Bashar Assad on Sunday issued Law no. 11 for 2013 which adds a new article to the penal code covering involvement of children in combat.
The new article stipulates sentences of penal labor for 10-20 years and a fine of 1-3 million SP for those found to have recruited a child under the age of 18 for the purpose of involvement in combat or other related activities.
The law also stipulates punishment for those who force another person to have sexual intercourse, either through violence or threats, with a life sentence. Punishment will be death if the crime is committed against anyone under the ages of 15 and/or if the crime is carried out at gunpoint.
