The Liberal party or Al Ahrar is part of the Democratic Alliance that is running in Egypt’s Parliamentary and Shura Council elections. It appeared as a political platform in 1976, but converted to a political party in 1977, and was given the name of the Socialist Liberal party. The party was headed by late Egyptian Free Officer Mustafa Kamel Murad; and is currently led by Helmy Salem.
The party took part in all elections in Egypt. In the Parliamentary elections of year 2000, the party won 444 parliamentary seats.
Al Ahrar party believes in the freedom of the country and the citizens. According to its program, the party believes that the Islamic law is the main source of the legislation. It also advocates the continuous development that fulfills the workers’ needs. Moreover, the party works on narrowing the gaps between different social levels and providing prosperity to citizens.
