AUC's Third Annual Benefit Dinner Raises Scholarship Funds for Women

The third annual AUC Benefit Dinner was held in New York City under the theme AUC: Inspiring Women. The intent of the event is to showcase the caliber of AUC graduates in Egypt and abroad who are actively contributing to Egypt and our global society. At the event, AUC raised more than $400,000, with net proceeds used to support scholarships for female students at the University. Three AUC alumnae were also honored at the event: Rana El-Kaliouby '98,'00, chief science officer of Affectiva, a spinoff of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Heba Morayef '02, Egypt director of Human Rights Watch; and Haifaa Al-Mansour, Saudi Arabia's first female filmmaker. Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor, founder and chair of Al Habtoor Group, addressed the Class of 2014 at the 91st annual commencement ceremony. A successful businessman and longtime supporter of education, Al Habtoor received an honorary Doctor of Philosophy from the University. Read more. View commencement photos here. For more than five years, Reem Al Olaby ’10, ’14, a recipient of the Yousef Jameel PhD Fellowship in Applied Sciences and Engineering, has been researching and investigating ways to fight the two most dangerous diseases that are considered public health challenges in the world, Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) and malaria. Omkolthoum El-Badawy, the first student to graduate from the Yousef Jameel GAPP Public Leadership Program, has always had a passion to help people and make a difference, particularly in health care services, and her experience at AUC has helped her acquire many skills and expertise to achieve that goal. Elaine Van Dalen ’14, a Middle East studies master’s student, is this year’s recipient of the Magda al-Nowaihi Graduate Student Award in Gender Studies, which recognizes student theses that focus on gender issues in any discipline. Read more

AUC held its mid-year commencement ceremonies for 701 graduate and undergraduate degree candidates. Outstanding students received named awards for their academic achievements and accomplishments outside the classroom. Read more
 
Yosra El Maghraby (’04, ’08, ’14) is the first graduate of the University's PhD program, which was established through a generous donation from Yousef Jameel '68, AUC alumnus and renowned businessman and philanthropist. Read more

The Senior Class Gift of 2014 marks the highest level of participation from the graduating class; where 34 percent of students gave back amounting to more than $1,000.

Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor will receive an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from AUC at the June 2014 commencement ceremony. Read more

AUC has recently received a rare collection of more than 1,000 cactus plants of different sizes and types from Saad El Din Al Rakshy, professor of dairy microbiology at Alexandria University. Read more


 
HSBC has partnered with AUC to support community development projects at Abu Minqar, a newly reclaimed, remote oasis community in the Western Desert. On October 22, 2013, Hayel Saeed Endowed Scholarship recipients met a representative from the Hayel Saeed Anam Group of Companies, Ayman Hafez, assistant general manager, to brief him on their academic status, recent activities and their plans after graduation. Mr. Hafez was pleased with the scholars and offered them jobs at the Hayel Saeed Anam Group of Companies after graduation.

As part of HSBC’s Diversity and Inclusion Awareness Month, the bank invited Mohamed ElShafie, political science student at AUC and recipient of the HSBC Bank Egypt Public School Scholarship to deliver words of inspiration to HSBC employees. Read more
 
On October 1, 2013, AUC celebrated its newly awarded scholars and awarded outstanding current scholars at the second Annual Scholarship Ceremony in the presence of scholarship recipients, their parents, faculty and staff. Read more

On September 16, 2013, AUC signed an agreement with the Commercial International Bank (CIB) Egypt to establish the CIB Endowed Professorship in Banking to promote knowledge of banking through teaching, research and service. Read more; Click here for media coverage
