Edward Snowden, the National Security Agency leaker, was raised in North Carolina as a child but doesnt appear to have resided here in the past two years.
The Star-News in Wilmington reported in June that Snowden was registered to vote at an address in the citys Windemere neighborhood from April 2009 to February 2011. The residence was bought by Snowdens mother, Elizabeth Wendy Snowden, in 2004, according to property records. Her sister, Julie Barrett, lived at the address, neighbors said.
Neighbors told The Star-News they did not remember seeing Edward Snowden at the home. They also said the house seemed to have been vacant for the past six months to a year.
Wendy Snowden and Snowdens father, Lonnie, both grew up in Elizabeth City, according to a Bloomberg report in June. They met at Northeastern High School in Elizabeth City and got married in 1979, after turning 18, Bloomberg said.
Edward Snowden was born in 1983. When he was about 9 or 10, the family moved to Maryland. Snowden attended Crofton Woods Elementary School and Crofton Middle School, according to The Baltimore Sun. He later attended Arundel High School but did not graduate.
The Sun reported that Snowden took classes at Anne Arundel Community College from 1999 until 2005 but did not receive a degree.
Snowdens parents are divorced, and Lonnie Snowden has remarried. He retired from the U.S. Coast Guard in 2009, Bloomberg reported.
Wendy Snowden is chief deputy clerk in charge of administration and information technology for the U.S. District Court in Baltimore.
Snowden has an older sister, Jessica, who works for the Federal Judicial Center in Washington, Bloomberg reported.
The News & Observer talked to several people in Elizabeth City, but none could recall Edward Snowden as a child.
