Consumer Complaints & Reviews

My 2 Boston Terriers are almost 5 years old and have been eating this brand & flavor for a couple years with no problems. I opened a new bag on October 13th and they didn't want to eat it. I thought they were just being picky. I basically forced them to eat it for 3 days until they absolutely refused to touch it. During those 3 days of them eating it they became lethargic, had very bad gas, and obvious intestinal discomfort. I followed them to inspect their poos & they were the foulest smelling things ever & were encased with slime. Then came the diarrhea. I feel bad it took me 3 days to catch on but glad that it only took me 3 days to catch on. I went to the bag and smelled it. It smelled nasty when I put my face down in the bag. The expiration date on the bag said June 2015.

When I called Nutro, they were very flippant about it. They said it was fine when it left their plant in TN so it must have spoiled during shipping. WHAT?! The rep said just take it back to Petsmart & get one with a different lot number. Are you kidding me? I kept samples and returned the bag for a refund. Since Nutro is denying all responsibility and trying to put it on the shipper, why don't they just go ahead and try to say I caused it to spoil? Seems where this whole thing is going. What a load of **. For those of you who didn't know (like myself until today) Nutro dog food is a MARS company. That's right, candy bars. Research them. You might change what you buy & eat yourself!

I realize the $1000 I was spending with them per year is just chump change and will in no way affect them. My goal here is to let others be aware of what happened to my dogs so maybe it won't happen to yours. I'm luckier than others have been. My dogs didn't die from their tainted food.

Decided to "upgrade" my cats food from Purina One sensitive systems to Nutro Max Cat. Cat ate for the first time, within 10 minutes he threw up really bad. He then was out of it and couldn't stand, actually fell over. He spent the night in the vet's last night and appears to be okay today. Thank goodness. What is in this stuff?

My little Dachshund-Pommie cross, Kujo became very ill on Sunday, October 19, 2014, although he started showing signs of distress about the same time we opened up a bag of NUTRO "Natural Choice Adult Small Bites." He's been at the vet all this week - had a 105 fever, liver enzymes off the charts, enlarged liver, enlarged heart and fluid on lungs. He's 9, and was active and lively until this illness occurred. Would not have suspected the food until a second dog, Misty, started vomiting yesterday (4 times). She vomited again this morning so to the vet she went for testing, monitoring and treatment as needed.

Her symptoms are similar to those reported by other pet owners with complaints about NUTRO. Internet research of NUTRO brands provided information regarding a 2008 recall. Further research led me to this site, Consumeraffairs.com, which contains numerous complaints about the various NUTRO brands causing illness in pets through today, October 23, 2014. I am planning on submitted the food to an independent certified lab for testing. My next steps will depend upon the results of testing.

We bought this dog food. We bought our dog Nutro Ultra Gluten-Free Small Breed Adult Chicken, Potato & Peas Recipe Dry Dog Food By Nutro Ultra, thinking it would help our 8 year cockapoo be more active. She was starting to be less active and playful. So we gradually gave her this food mixed with her Ol' Roy dog food for 5 or 6 days. She seemed to perk up and be more playful, but now the last few days she has had soft poop. She has pooped in the house several times, she never does that!!! Then today she has had runny poop, and tonight it was blood mixed in it. I gave her a Pepto tablet mashed up with bread. We took her food away, she will not drink right now. I plan to take her to the vet in the morning. I have read story after story about this food causing these problems. I thought it would be good for her instead of the dog food she was eating, but now she is sick...

We have (had) 2 dogs a 14 year old rescue dog with health issues and 10 year old healthy German Shepherd. They both have been eating Nutro dog food for at least 5 years recently because my rescue dog was having some stomach issues. I was reading the bags and the small bites Lamb and brown rice food said it was good for that. They didnt get sick right away... then she started throwing up uncontrollably one night and in the morning she was really weak and throwing up blackish brown stuff. Took her to the vet. They thought she got into some poison of some kind... She had internal bleeding and we felt that she was too far gone........

A few days later our German Shepherd starting throwing up just the same as our other dog...that's when I thought there must be something wrong with the dog food. Looked online and saw this site. My heart broke..... Took our dog to the vet ...... She ended up staying there 2 nights intravenously feed and anti-vomiting and antibiotics, Science Diet can dog food for GI track... and now is eating Science Diet dry dog food and seems to be recovering. I have the remaining bad dog food and bag.

I'm wondering if you have changed or made a very BIG MISTAKE!!! But my 5-year old Boxer and 2 Boston terriers are so sick after they eat!! And yellow stomach, diarrhea, a rumbling tummy, dehydration and no energy!!! At first I thought my Boxer had drank some bad water but all the girls were then sick later!! It's been a week I have now stopped feeding them your product!!! Never had this problem before!!

As I write this, our dog is in the ER for the 2nd time in two weeks with acute pancreatitis. Symptoms are vomiting, shaking, and weakness. We just began introducing Nutro back into his diet yesterday. NUTRO can make your dog very sick. Purchase a different dog food or go to a bland diet.

I recently had to switch to another brand of dog food when Purina discontinued the type I was using. Nutro Max was highly recommended by a man who said he'd been feeding it for years to his large dogs with great results. I have been feeding this since August and in the last month, both dogs have started vomiting yellow bile and having loose stools. They attack the grass every time they go outdoors and one of the dogs (with the more sensitive stomach) drools almost constantly. I almost lost this one to Iams, which is why I had switched before. I finally decided to check online and was totally shocked and dismayed to read these comments, especially after my previous experience. These same symptoms everyone is describing were also what I was seeing in my own dogs. I did all the expensive blood tests, etc before, but decided to skip the tests and just change the food this time. Tonight was the first meal off the Nutro, so I'm hopeful I've changed in time for my dogs. And I also hope I don't wake up to various areas of yellow bile vomit to be cleaned up in the morning.

I have had him on this since 6 weeks, no problems other than sometimes he seem bored with the taste. We gone through 2 big bags; however, he has came down with bowel problems... At first it was soft yellow mush... last night it is dark brown water after this 3rd bag we opened Friday... This is Monday morning, he is still sleeping. Figured I would google the food.... he does eat this third bag of food better.... which makes me think there is something different about it that doesn't agree with him... We are stopping it today.

We've been giving our 10-year-old beagle "Nutro small breed lamb & rice dog food" since he was a puppy. All has been fine up until the last few weeks when our beagle started having very loose stools and emitting unusually strong gas; very foul odor. Then, in the last couple of days, he refused to eat his food. We took him to the vet today and now have him on antibiotics and are starting a bland food regimen of 3 parts rice to 1 part chicken. Hopefully, he'll be fine but we are taking our remaining bag of Nutro dog food back to the pet store where we purchased it and lodging a complaint. Nutro must have put something new in this product or may have inadvertently tainted it. STOP GIVING YOUR DOG THIS FOOD!

Has Nutro Ultra changed any ingredient in the adult dog food? I've fed it to my two cockapoos for several years with good results. But since August (last three bags) both dogs developed soft runny yellow stools. Then vomiting and diarrhea. My four year old female got sick and began passing blood. Now after antibiotics and special diet they're back on Nutro Ultra and stool has not returned to normal. What has happened to the formula?

Your food was killing my dog... She puked everyday, yellow bile and she smelled. She was slowly dying until I figured out it was the food! Please people stop giving your dog this food. Save your dog. I complained but never got a response.

As soon as we changed to this dog food from Hills Science Diet large breed puppy formula, our dog started vomiting up a yellow substance. She did this a few times and then a few days later when I was feeding her 100% of Nutro she began to have yellow colored, loose stool. Obviously, this is a reaction to the Nutro food. This food should NOT be on the shelves at pet food stores. I have been feeding her boiled chicken and rice for the last few days and she is so much better and happier. I will never purchase their products again and I do not recommend that anyone else do so either.

I have been feeding Ultra Nutro small breed for 3 years to my 3 yr old Mini Schnauzer and now to my new puppy. Well the last two weeks they have both experienced runny stools they act fine no fevers. Then I researched the food and found all of these complaints. Has the company even responded? I am switching them. I feel sick to my stomach about this and scared they could really get sick now. It has made me paranoid about even their snacks!!

Nutro natural choice lamb and rice large breed adult - I have a seven year old male golden retriever service dog that was raised on the same food and I was told I should keep him on it since it had worked so well with all the golden retrieves with no issues. So I have continued to feed it to him for five years now even the treats that match. After opening the most recent bad about three days into the bag, his stools started to get loose to the point of like almost melted soft serve ice cream. After a $450 visit to the vet, a massive a out of blood work which all came back fine, and special diet for a week and probiotics and other medicine his stool was near normal and then came time to start his regular diet. About day 2-3 the loose stool came back and now he is straight out has the runs and it smells sour. His energy has been fine but you can tell his stomach does not feel well. I am still in contact with the vet and the problem has yet to be resolved. I was just scanning the Internet for solutions and found this site. But he will not be getting the nutro again since I already contacted Petsmart manager who told me to bring what is left to the store.

My 15 year old Aussie cattle dog has now been sick for 3 weeks and after extensive testing has been ruled out for liver and spleen. I was talking with a friend who mentioned she has a dog that was doing the same thing last week. I asked what she fed hers and she said Nutro. I was like so am I! So I did the IV fluids and Pepcid and got mine back on track but my vet suspected something far more insidious. He finally started eating mild foods and was recovering a week ago when my GF accidentally fed him Nutro again. Started the process over with the vomiting and he was better again. Now yesterday he got into the food of my other dogs that were still on it without Sx. and he threw up the food again last night. I am taking all the food and quarantining it and holding it for inspection because though the other dogs aren't sick they are considerably younger and could probably eat a boot and be ok. I am warning all others to stay off the food if having Sx. and I will retain the remainder for any class actions against this company should I find out this food is indeed tainted.

We have an older small dog. We noticed 3 weeks after we began giving him ultra his seizures increased. We decided to take him off ultra and place him back on old food. His seizures have decreased. He went to having about 1 a month then with food change he was having 1 a day. We are not sure that ultra caused this but his symptoms resolved after changing good back to original.

We had switched food from Trader Joe’s to Nutro. For a while they were eating it. Our Chi wouldn't eat it at all. At 3 in the morning, our 17 year old JRT started throwing up and continued throwing up and then the diarrhea started. We finally took her to the vet and the blood work was perfect, blood of a 2 year old. They asked if we had given her anything new or she got into trash. She is not a trash dog. They gave her fluids and meds. The next day, our other JRT got the same symptoms. We googled the food and found all the complaints. We called our vet and they told us the food was the culprit. We called Petco and spammed Nutro's facebook page. Their reply, "We care about our pets too. Please contact our customer service." I have a friend who fed her dog Nutro and had the exact same reaction and another friend whose 2 dogs died from it, all within a few days of each other.

I started feeding my dog Nutro Lamb and Brown Rice Adult food in June. Shortly after that he started vomiting foamy bile a couple of days a week, then he started vomiting up all his food immediately after eating a couple of times also. I took him to the vet and he was put on 2 different medicines for his stomach. While on the medicine he seemed to be getting better, but once the medicine was done, the bile vomiting continued again and he made it his business every morning to go outside and eat grass like crazy, repeated by vomiting. He also experienced panting. This went on for 2 months. Also he showed no interest in eating or for his food. Then one day I googled Nutro food and I was so upset to see nearly 2000 complaints with other animals having the same issues. Needless to say I switched his food and immediately afterwards the vomiting stopped. Although he still showed no interest in eating, eventually he started to eat and getting back to his old self. I will never purchase Nutro food again.

My dog was sick for 2 months. Not sure what it was, she gets in to everything. German wirehaired pointer always in something, but my brother saw that there is something with his dog and we been using this dog food for years and he said that his dog was getting sick from the food. He was Vomiting Bile at least once a week and mine was also. I looked it up and read all the comments. It needs to be out there that the Nutro pet food is no good. I just went to the store and got Blue Buffalo for her. I hope she feels better about the new food, but I will never buy this Nutro again. Hope this works, to spread the word, to leave a comment and let people know that is going on...

Several years ago, I was feeding my 2 Chihuahuas Nutro dry food for years. My male dog started having problems including vomiting blood. He wouldn't eat. I took him to the vet who treated him for vomiting and gave him something to coat his stomach (they really didn't know what was causing it). He improved some, but then he would get bad again, symptoms would return after a week or so after stopping the medication. We tried the treatment again, and again he improved, but once off the meds he got worse again. He finally sent me to a specialist. He treated him with the same meds but for a longer period of time (I think 2 weeks instead of 1).

I wondered if it was the food I was feeding him, so I decided to change it. I switched to Blue Buffalo. I believe that the Nutro food might have made my dog sick. My Chihuahua is now almost 13 years old and he's doing pretty good despite his aging ailments such as heart murmur. Soon after I switched his food, he started getting energy, acting normal and happy again. He's always been a picky eater and has had issues with foods. Blue Buffalo Basics and even their other varieties that I've tried are awesome. They've done wonders for my dogs. I spoil them and want to give them the best nutrition I can.

Years later, I also became aware of the recall that Nutro had when all those dogs were dying from tainted dog food. I was so concerned that I had given my dogs Nutro all those years. I just hope that the food I use now won't have problems like others have in the past, with food being tainted, etc.

I have been feeding my 10 month old standard Poodle nutro Max dog food. Recently after he ate it, he threw up. He continued throwing up and then start having bloody diarrhea. We took him to the vet - they were not sure what is was. I spoke to another person who used this food and said it was awful. Unfortunately our dog died and now after looking at all the reviews I'm sure it was the dog food.

My 2 Dobermans, 1 is vomiting and both have the runs. I thought something weird about their food. I had to take one of them to the vet. She put her on a bland diet. Her pancreas level high. I feed these dogs all their life this food. Why did they screw it up?

I noticed since giving this poor quality, cheaper brand food to my 3 cats, my older 7 year old cat has been throwing up a lot. I should have known better. Being an investigative researcher for over 14 years into the fraudulent modern medical system and pet foods industry, I knew many pet food companies use rendered recycled, euthanized cats and dog's from animal hospitals mixed with restaurant scrap meats to increase their profits without any moral conscience about the health of pets. Prepare to be horrified! Google search this heading: Pet foods made with rendered euthanized cats and dogs.

My dog has also been experiencing diarrhea for several days. I recently purchased a new bag of Senior food from Petco. I decided to go online to see if a recall was in effect, as I have had nothing but good experience since I began feeding my lab Nutro (after the Iams scare). I am steaming her some brown rice as I type and I plan to contact Petco in the morning to return this food.

I was put on to Nutro by a Nutro representative at Petco over a few months ago. They vouched for the quality of the food and its benefits on skin and coat. My Dogue De bordeaux has some thyroid issue that affect his coat so I figured it was a solid move. Months went by and I began to vouch for the affects of the food on my dog's skin and coat. A week ago his few bags ran out and I switch from the Chicken Flavor... to lamb flavor. For the next few days my dog had diarrhea, panting, etc. non stop. 140-lb dogue having diarrhea is not a pretty sight with bleeding included. I eliminated new treats, milkbones, even his daily medicine. It came down to the food. As soon as I switched to plain rice and chicken the diarrhea stopped. I randomly decided to google it and here it all is... Over 1500 complaints all similar to mine. This is absolutely disgusting that a company would put out a product like this and charge the prices they pay. Hopefully Petco won't give me any trouble issuing a refund tomorrow. Next time I'll have the Nutro Rep come clean my dog's diarrhea after I work all day.

I was feeding my 11 year old Jack Russell Nutro Ultra Senior for a few months because I thought I was giving her a better quality food and researching. We had no problems until I bought a new bag on August 11th and notice some diarrhea, but then come this last Sunday the diarrhea was explosive and she started throwing up. Took her food away and started her on a bland diet of ground turkey and rice. She seemed to be getting better, but woke up Wednesday morning to find she had thrown up 3 times on the stairs and now bloody diarrhea all over our downstairs. Took her to the vet, fecal came back fine, blood work fine and x-rays fine. I mentioned to the vet that I just bought a new bag of Nutro Ultra Senior dog food, she said to throw it out.

I started to research to see if there were any Nutro recalls and come across this site and found that over the past few months many dogs just like my Molly have had the same exact symptoms. I was and still am so angry at Nutro. Instead of throwing away the food I brought it back to PetsMart and made them aware of what just happened with my dog, they refunded my money. I kept a small bag of the food because I want to get it tested and will be calling Nutro. My dog is now home after an expensive visit to the vet, on two medications (Metronidazole & Famotidine) and a bland diet of canned I/D Science Diet for the next week. She's a tough cookie and I am praying she will be fine, but have read some other dogs were not. There is something wrong with the past few months and probably current Nutro dog foods.

OMG!!! I can't believe this. I have been feeding my buddy Ultra Small Breed for close to 5 years now. I didn't mind paying more at the pet store for this brand because I thought I was giving him one of the best on the market. Over the past two weeks, my dog has had issues with diarrhea, vomiting and when I saw bloody stools, I freaked. He wouldn't leave my side and was very lethargic. Took him to the vet. Blood work came back fine. Stool sample came back fine. Vet put him on antibiotic, which he is just finishing, and beef and rice diet. He is gradually improving but I thought I would research online other food options with probiotics. I could not believe my eyes when I landed on this link and read all the horrible reviews. I never even considered it could be an issue with his food!

I am at a loss! I have no idea what to feed him now. All the brands seem the same to me. I don't have much experience with this. Could anyone suggest alternative reputable brands? He is a toy poodle, 9 lbs. 8 years old and acts like he is a puppy, which everyone thinks he is. I feel just awful!! Also, I mixed my dry food with a little bit of wet just to make it easier for him to eat. Should I be doing this? This is my first dog, a rescue, and I want to do my very best for him. He was in bad shape when I got him and had been doing so great. Thank you for all suggestions.

We began feeding our dogs Nutro Ultra dry dog food 3 years ago when our Chow was 11 years old and our Husky mix was just months old. Our Chow had GI issues her entire life. I had tried multiple different dog foods throughout her life but nothing helped. I wish I had found Nutro Ultra sooner because since I started feeding her this food, all of her GI issues have gone away and, at 14 years of age, she seems happier and healthier than ever. Our younger dog has only been on Nutro so I have nothing else to compare it to for him, but I can say that he has grown to a muscular 70 lb pup who loves to go on long trail runs and mountain bike rides with us. His coat is shiny and healthy. We love this dog food brand and will not switch. I am very surprised by all the negative reviews.

Recently we had a beloved furbaby pass away after being sick for several weeks. I've been doing research to make sure the same thing didn't happen to our other cat, and I came across these reviews. My cat was suffering from many of the symptoms the rest of you have posted about. I did a bit of snooping, and there's an ingredient called L-Carnitine that Nutro, for whatever reason, decided to add to its formula this past year. It's in many of both their cat and dog food products, and is advertised in their 'MAX Indoor Cat Weight Control Formula' as 'help burn fat and decreased levels of fat to help your cat maintain a healthy weight.' Nutro is intentionally poisoning our pets, and we are being made fools of by paying them to do so. If any of you would like to start a class action lawsuit, I will gladly sign up to support it.
