Arab-Israeli Conflict
The eruption of the third Gaza war since 2008 is yet another manifestation of the growing threat posed by Islamist militants within an increasingly unstable Middle East. Hamas knows that it cannot defeat Israel in a war, but it has taken Gaza’s population hostage and hopes to use the graves of its human shields to rally Arab and Muslim support for its radical Islamist agenda. The Arab-Israeli conflict has been a source of instability in the Middle East since the birth of Israel in 1948.  After a series of wars, Egypt signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1979 and Jordan followed suit in 1994.  Israeli-Palestinian negotiations broke down after the 1993 Oslo accords and many Arab extremists remain committed to destroying Israel.
