Twerps Sign to Merge Records

Easy-going guitar-pop quartet Twerps have joined Arcade Fire, Neutral Milk Hotel, The Mountain Goats, M Ward and many other flagship indie acts on the roster of North Carolina label Merge Records.

The label, which celebrated its 25th anniversary last month, was founded by Superchunk members Mac McCaughan and Laura Ballance. The first fruits of the partnership with Twerps will be a digital release of Underlay, the Melbourne band’s new eight-song EP. The EP is out on vinyl, tape and digital in Australia, meanwhile, on the band’s longtime label, Chapter Music. It was recorded by drummer Alex Macfarlane, also of The Stevens.

The EP follows 2011’s self-titled debut album, which won over everyone from Jessica Alba to Pitchfork, and a 2012 7”. Twerps have a second LP coming out in January next year – through Chapter in Australia and New Zealand and through Merge in the rest of the world. Watch a trailer for it here.

In a presser, Merge called Twerps “cheeky, charming and touchingly direct … international pop champions.” The band launch the EP this Saturday (Aug 23) in Sydney at The Red Rattler with Bed Wettin’ Bad Boys and The Friendsters; tickets here. A sold-out Melbourne launch will follow next Friday (Aug 29) at The Shadow Electric with Fabulous Diamonds and The Shifters.
