    How were organizations selected?

100% of the money raised from this event will be donated to organizations that create positive, lasting change for veterans and their families.

Will all VSOs receive equal amounts of money? Or what is the process for allocating donations?

The Onward Veteran advisory committee will make final allocation decision.

Dave Grohl's ascension to legendary status as one of the most beloved and respected figures on the international music scene goes back to his joining the DC-based punk rock band Scream at the age of 17. Three years and much international touring later, Grohl became drummer for Nirvana, making his recorded debut with them on 1991's generation-defining Nevermind. Following a guest drumming opportunity with Tom Petty, Grohl took center stage, forming Foo Fighters, on whose 1995 self-titled debut he wrote, recorded and sang every note save for one guitar track. Foo Fighters have since grown into arguably the last great American arena/stadium rock band, with 2011's Wasting Light debuting at #1 in the U.S. and 11 other countries while the Foo Fighters catalogue--which also includes The Colour & The Shape (1997), There Is Nothing Left To Lose (1999), One By One (2002), In Your Honor (2005), Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace (2007)--has raked in 11 Grammy Awards, sold 25 million copies and spawned anthems like Everlong, Monkey Wrench, My Hero, Learn To Fly, All My Life, Best Of You, The Pretender, Walk and more. Prior to the Wasting Light sessions, Grohl returned to the drums for an album and world tour with Them Crooked Vultures, the Grammy-winning supergroup he formed with Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones and Queens of the Stone Age's Joshua Homme. Among the other artists with whom Grohl has collaborated are Paul McCartney, David Bowie, Mick Jagger, Neil Young, Elton John, Queens of the Stone Age, Nine Inch Nails, Roger Taylor and Brian May of Queen, Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead and Tenacious D, in whose 2006 film Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny, he played the role of Satan.

In 2013, Grohl made his debut as a feature director/producer with the acclaimed documentary SOUND CITY.  Premiering to universal acclaim at Sundance, debuting at #1 on the iTunes documentary chart and achieving an uber-rare 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating, SOUND CITY focused both on the history of the legendary Van Nuys, CA studio for which it is named--where such artists as Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Fear, Johnny Cash, Rick Springfield, DIO, Nirvana, Rage Against The Machine, Queens of the Stone Age, Metallica, Nine Inch Nails, Weezer and countless others created classic after classic over the past 40 years--and on the ongoing fight to preserve the human element of music in an increasingly digital world.  Hailed by Peter Travers of Rolling Stone as an "exhilarating documentary about what makes life worth living," The New York Times as "candy to several generations' worth of rock fans" and NPR as "a celebrations of just how unbelievably awesome it is to make rock music for a living," SOUND CITY has since been certified as a Gold Longform Video by the RIAA, while its companion album SOUND CITY--REAL TO REEL took home a Best Rock Song Grammy for Dave Grohl, Paul McCartney, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear's "Cut Me Some Slack." Grohl's personal connection to the film's namesake dates back over 20 years, to the 1991 recording of Nirvana's Nevermind, which sold over 30 million copies worldwide, transforming the entire modern musical landscape and forever altering the course of Grohl's life.

Grohl’s newest directorial endeavor is the eight-part HBO docuseries FOO FIGHTERS: SONIC HIGHWAYS. Each one-hour episode chronicles the writing and recording of a song for Foo Fighters’ eighth album, also titled Sonic Highways, in a different American musical landmark -- Austin, Chicago, Los Angeles, Nashville, New Orleans, New York, Seattle, Washington, D.C.. Described by Grohl as a love letter to the history of American music, FOO FIGHTERS: SONIC HIGHWAYS captures the band tapping into the musical heritage and history of each location, and features appearances from local legends who define the musical identity of those cities. For the album and series, Grohl and bandmates Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel, Chris Shiflett and Pat Smear, along with producer Butch Vig, based themselves at a legendary studio integral to the unique history and character of each location. One song was written and recorded in each city, featuring locals legends sitting in, with every lyric written in an unprecedented experimental style: Grohl waited to write lyrics until the last day of each session, so as to be inspired by the local personalities, experiences and interviews for the HBO series. “I’ve pulled up the family tree of American music and exposed its roots to find inspiration for the next Foo Fighters record,” says Grohl of the series and the album. “This is a musical map of America…  not only the making of our most ambitious album... this is SOUND CITY on steroids."

A Grammy Award-winning recording artist, Academy Award-winning actress and best-selling author, Jennifer Hudson is an extraordinary talent. From humble beginnings, Hudson began singing in a small Chicago church where, week after week, she brought the congregation to its feet. From there, she’s gone on to worldwide acclaim. Hudson most recently released her third critically acclaimed album, “JHUD,” which opened in the Billboard Top 10 on September 23, 2014. The album, released by Sony/RCA, features hit tracks such as “Dangerous,” a bass-thumping dance track written and produced by the acclaimed 1985/OVO; heavy hitting, disco-inspired track, “It’s Your World,” which features and was produced by R. Kelly; “He Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere,” a ladies anthem featuring rapper Iggy Azaelea; “Walk It Out,” a throwback record produced by and featuring Timbaland that shows Hudson’s Chicago roots; and the Pharrell-produced “I Can’t Describe (The Way I Feel),” featuring T.I.. Hudson also included a track produced by UK rising stars Gorgon City. “I Still Love You,” brings the perfect mix of dance and house to an already feel-good album. Hudson returned the favor on Gorgon City’s album, “Sirens,” with “Go All Night,” which was co-written by Kiesza. The track recently released in the UK to massive praise. Meanwhile, Hudson’s album has garnered serious attention in the US and abroad with recognition of a true artist’s fresh take that shows off a new sound, a thoughtful departure and a fearless rendering of work produced by some of today’s most prolific collaborators.

There's nothing typical about her. In person and on stage, she's got a spunky panache, but it's laced with a timeless elegance. Musically, she can just as easily echo Motown soul as well as she can nod to nineties hip-hop. Blessed with an astounding voice and natural knack for a hook, she redefines what's possible within pop as she upholds its traditions. In other words, Jessie J always remains one-of-a-kind. That's why she's quickly become the consummate 21st century superstar and a palpable and powerful pop culture force.

In 2011, the world first took notice of the UK-born singer and songwriter in a very big way. Her full-length debut album, Who You Are [LAVA], heralded the songstress's arrival as a worldwide icon. It debuted Top 15 on the Billboard Top 200, and it generated an astounding six Top 10 smashes at radio. "Price Tag" [featuring B.o.B] went platinum stateside and seized #1 in 18 major territories. Then, "Domino", her biggest U.S. hit to date, took flight on the charts. The track went on to achieve double-platinum status and become a ubiquitous anthem around the globe. To date, her album sales exceed 3 million and single sales surpass 20 million and counting.

Along the way, she received the prestigious BRIT Award for "Critic's Choice". It's an honor previously held by the likes of Ellie Goulding, Florence + the Machine, and many more. In addition, the BBC crowned her with the high honor of Sound of 2011. She even received a Grammy Award nomination in 2012. Fans and tastemakers continued to wholeheartedly embrace Jessie J as she acted as the 2012 London Olympic Games Ambassador.

2014 sees her continue to stand out and set the pace though. In July, the first single from her forthcoming sophomore album arrived with a bang—literally. Jessie J teamed up with rising diva Ariana Grande and rap's reigning queen Nicki Minaj for "Bang Bang". It's a blockbuster anthem, combining Jessie J's inimitable delivery, Ariana Grande's massive range, and Nicki Minaj's deft wordplay. As soon as "Bang Bang" dropped, the charts exploded. Immediately, the track captured the #1 spot on iTunes Overall Top Songs Chart and reached Gold status within weeks of release. It perfectly sets the stage for the October 14th release of her next LP, Sweet Talker, which will also undoubtedly change the game yet again.

Ultimately, there's nobody quite like Jessie J, and that's a very wonderful thing.

Formed in 1981 by drummer Lars Ulrich and guitarist and vocalist James Hetfield, Metallica have become one of the most influential and commercially successful rock bands in history, having sold 110 million albums worldwide and playing to millions of fans the world over. They have scored several multi-platinum albums, including 1991's “Metallica” (commonly referred to as "The Black Album"), which is the best selling album in the history of Soundscan, scanning 16 million albums in the United States alone. Their latest studio album, Death Magnetic, was certified platinum just six weeks after it debuted atop the Billboard Top 200 Album chart in October 2008. “Death Magnetic” charted at #1 in 32 countries and sold five million copies worldwide. Metallica have also garnered numerous awards and accolades, including nine Grammy Awards, two American Music Awards, and multiple MTV Video Music Awards, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in 2009.  The band celebrated its 30th-Anniversary in 2011 with a week's worth of fan club concerts at the Fillmore Theater in San Francisco, CA. In 2012, Metallica unveiled a brand new stage in Mexico City that featured iconic elements that spanned its 30-year career and is featured in the film Metallica Through the Never. They played eight shows to nearly 180,000 fans at the Sports Arena in Mexico City.  Picturehouse released Metallica Through the Never in North America on September 27, 2013. The music-driven, 3D motion picture film immerses audiences in a bracing, raw and visceral cinematic experience with spectacular live performance footage of Metallica's most iconic songs -- created exclusively for film -- combined with a bold, narrative story featuring imagery drawn from the band's trailblazing iconography.  In December 2013, Metallica performed a rare concert in Antarctica where all attendees listened to the performance through headphones to protect the environment.  With that show, the band made history by becoming the first act to ever play all seven continents (all within a year), earning themselves a spot in the 60th Anniversary Edition of the Guinness Book of World Records.  Metallica performed “One” with Chinese Pianist and Grammy Ambassador Lang Lang on the 56th Annual Grammy Awards on January 26th and two days later Metallica Through the Never was released on DVD and Blu-Ray.  On November 24, 2014, Metallica will release a ten-year anniversary 2-disc Blu-Ray of their long out of print, groundbreaking movie, METALLICA:  Some Kind of Monster.
