The Campus Environmental Sustainability Team has drafted a climate action plan to be released in 2011 and is in the process of drafting a five-year sustainability strategic plan. A full-time director manages the sustainability office; two co-sustainability officers are responsible for overseeing the campus sustainability program; and multiple other staff members are involved with sustainability initiatives. New staff are educated about environmental stewardship at orientation.

Climate Change & Energy

NC State is conducting its second greenhouse gas emissions inventory. Energy efficiency technologies installed on campus include economizers, HVAC system upgrades, and variable speed drives. The Solar House features a photovoltaic array and wind turbine, and solar panels on the RBC Center generate 79 kilowatts of energy.

Food & Recycling
A 
Dining services purchases local foods as well as organic produce and fair trade coffee. Students receive discounts for using a mug, and a reusable to-go container program, Pack and Go, was implemented in 2010. All pre- and postconsumer food scraps are composted, and trayless dining saves 51,000 gallons of water each week.

The university mandates that all new construction and major renovations meet LEED Silver standards, and two residence halls on campus are Energy Star labeled. The university has reduced water consumption by 27 percent since 2005 through the use of low-flow water fixtures, xeriscaping, and weather-informed irrigation, among other measures.

Student Involvement

NC State offers six paid sustainability student internships. There are at least seven sustainability-themed student organizations on campus, including the Wolfpack Environmental Student Association and Students for Organic United Living. During an annual competition, students reduced their water usage by 29 percent.

Transportation
A 
All students and employees are eligible for a free public transportation pass, and the campus bus system provides transportation throughout all three campus precincts. WolfWheels, a new bike rental program, features 35 bikes. Individuals who carpool receive discounted parking permits and have access to preferable parking. Approximately 25 percent of the university fleet runs on alternative fuel.

The university makes a list of asset allocation, external managers, mutual funds, private equity holdings, and cash holdings available to the public online. The university does not make the shareholder voting record of its commingled funds public.

Investment Priorities
A 
The university and the NC State Investment Fund aim to optimize investment returns, and the endowment is currently invested in renewable energy funds. The university is exploring endowment investment in on-campus sustainability projects and community development loan funds, and uses investment managers who consider environmental and sustainability factors.
