Stephen Marston's appointment as university vice chancellor welcomed

THE University of Gloucestershire's appointment of Stephen Marston as Vice-Chancellor has been welcomed by those close to the institution.

Mr Marston is, at present, director general for higher education funding and reform at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

He will take the role, subject to approval by the Prime Minister, under the Business Appointment Rules for Civil Servants and following advice from the independent Advisory Committee on Business Appointments.

People have reacted well to the news on www. thisisgloucestershire.co.uk and other forums but there were also some who expressed doubts.

Dave M posted: "This has been such a long time coming. Staff were overjoyed to hear that someone of Mr Marston's calibre has been appointed, it signals a real change and gives staff hope that there will be a real culture change at the University of Gloucestershire, after all."

Dr Howard Fredrics agreed: "With the past record of systemic problems at University of Gloucestershire, fresh blood is exactly what the doctor ordered.

"I wish Mr Marston great success in his new appointment, and hope the university will soon become a place where staff and students will be proud to work and study."

Staff member added: "This appointment is welcomed by staff on the ground."

However, there were those who expressed concern.

Wiseguy said: "Mr Marston will have to tread very carefully, there are already rumblings senior management are not exactly jumping for joy."

Great Expectations posted: "The challenge will be huge and expectations have been raised with this new appointment."

Fred added: "Be careful what you wish for here."

Speaking after his appointment, Mr Marston said he was "delighted" to have the opportunity to lead the university as it prepares for the new higher education environment.

He said: "It is a university which has great strengths, enormous potential, and is successfully rebuilding its financial position."

The Reverend Malcolm Herbert, chairman of the University Council said they were "delighted" with the appointment.
