Inside Story
The vast Languedoc-Roussillon region on France’s Mediterranean coast has become a treasure trove of red wine values. Ample sunshine and prolific vineyards mean that there’s a lot of characterless, fruity bulk wine shipped out from here, but in recent decades an influx of ambitious vintners has arrived, offering high-quality, estate-grown wines.
This cuvée comes from one such vintner, Walter Pizzaferri, of Les Verrières de Montagnac. Pizzaferri is a Paris-based executive who fell in love with a small domaine in the rocky hills inland from Montpellier, in the Coteaux du Languedoc subregion. Pizzaferri convinced Olivier Groux, formerly the cellar-master at Bordeaux’s grand cru Château Lascombes, to head south to helm the cellar at Les Verrières. Groux brings a refined touch to this red, which is based chiefly on a traditional blend of peppery Syrah and fruity, plump Grenache.
In the Glass
This supple, bold red evokes the sun-warmed climes of its Mediterranean origins with its plump mulberry and blackberry fruit flavors. No mere fruit bomb, it has juicy acidity to balance its ripeness and spicy notes of white pepper and leather to lend complexity.
At the Table
Serve this exuberant red with rustic, boldly-flavored pork, red meat and game dishes. Its juicy acidity makes it an especially good match with sausage dishes, while its rich fruit flavors will complement dry-aged steaks and chops.
