Inside Story
Mendocino is the insider’s California wine country. This hilly coastal county is located directly north of Sonoma and boasts both ancient vines and hundreds of cutting-edge wineries, yet it remains relatively under the radar. Its signature varieties are Zinfandel, which is typically grown on warmer sites above the fog line, and Pinot Noir, a grape that thrives in the patchwork quilt of valleys and hollows that define this cool, redwood-dotted region.

Third-generation winemaker and Mendocino native Greg Graziano believes that, in addition to Pinot Noir, the region makes an ideal home for most members of the Pinot family, which include Pinot Meunier, a red variety that’s the most widely planted grape in Champagne, and Pinotage, a related grape grown almost exclusively in South Africa. For his Pinotrois (“Three Pinot”) blend, Graziano applies Burgundian techniques such as saignée, the art of bleeding off some juice after crushing fruit in order to intensify a wine’s color and flavors. Just a few barrels-worth of this rare blend are released each year.
In the Glass
Fragrant scents of red cherries and cranberries have a lightly earthy edge and lead to generous, supple flavors redolent of red fruits. Juicy acidity and a silky texture complete the balanced, medium-bodied palate.
At the Table
Pork, poultry and lighter red meat dishes—such as quick-cooking chops and steaks—will make fine accompaniments to the St. Gregory Pinotrois, especially if prepared with fresh herbs and earthy ingredients like mushrooms and root vegetables, which will echo the wine’s earthy notes.
