Now that we’ve had a week to recover and mull over What Was Miley Cyrus Thinking when she hit the stage twerking with Robin Thicke at the VMAs, Miley herself is speaking out about the much-discussed performance.
The gist of her defense: Um, what’s the big deal?
“How many times have we seen this play out in pop music?” Miley demanded with an accusatory tone in an interview with MTV News, who proudly boasted that Miley’s teddy bear-filled spectacle has “been subject to criticisms and critiques, called ‘hyper-sexualized,’ ‘the nadir of American Civilization,’ ‘an exaggerated spectacle meant to subvert pop-culture sexism.’”
“Madonna’s done it. Britney’s done it. Every VMA performance, anyone that performs, that’s what you’re looking for; you’re wanting to make history,” Cyrus said. “Me and Robin [Thicke] said the whole time, ‘You know we’re about to make history right now.’
What about the viewing audience, who watched, horrified, tweeting at a more frantic rate than when Beyonce hit the stage at the Super Bowl?
“They’re over-thinking it,” Miley explained. “You’re thinking about it more than I thought about it when I did it. I didn’t even think about it.”
That explains a lot.
