E-Book Preservation Service
In 2008, Portico introduced its E-Book Preservation Service to the publishing community to accommodate the rapidly rising production and use of e-books by the scholarly community; in 2011, library participation began. This service operates on a community model, like the E-Journals Preservation Service, through which both publishers and libraries help to defray the ongoing costs of operating the archive, including the IT infrastructure set up to ingest, archive, and migrate the content committed to the archive.
Access
Access scenarios or “trigger events” mirror those of the E-Journal Preservation Service:
- When a publisher ceases operations and titles are no longer available from any other source
- When a publisher ceases to publish and offer a title and it is not offered by another publisher or entity
- When back issues are removed from a publisher’s offering and are not available elsewhere
- Upon catastrophic failure by a publisher’s delivery platform for a sustained period of time
When e-book titles have “triggered,” they are available to all participants in the Portico E-Book Preservation Service, regardless of whether the participating institution has previously licensed the content.
