Universities, colleges, and other organizations are not known for their ability to turn on a dime, and yet their impact on our societies and ability to remain highly relevant over centuries is unparalleled. We want these organizations to thrive, particularly in light of emerging technologies and opportunities. Our work at Ithaka S+R – offering research and strategic consulting – has been instrumental in helping leaders in education know what is coming next, learn from rigorous and well-designed research rather than hype, and adapt to new realities and opportunities. We work with places like the Association of American University Presses, Harvard University Libraries, and the University System of Maryland. As a society, we all sense how technology is changing the way we work, teach, and learn. Ithaka S+R is dedicated to ensuring that we manage those changes in ways that help more people learn what they need to know to lead more productive and rewarding lives. Ithaka S+R’s work is organized into two areas, our Educational Transformation program and our Library and Scholarly Communication program.
Team members in our Library and Scholarly Communication program conduct and publish major research projects and consult with libraries, publishers, and scholarly societies. We help partner organizations better support scholarship, instruction, and student success, by empowering them to gather and utilize evidence that supports good decisions about strategic directions and service offerings. Our team has methodological expertise in survey research, ethnography and other anthropological methods, and administrative data-gathering.
Role
As an Analyst, you will work collaboratively on research projects and consulting engagements in the Library and Scholarly Communication program. You will contribute your qualitative research experience to our internationally renowned work to help colleges and universities understand the practices and needs of students and faculty members in order to improve the programs, technologies, and teaching and learning spaces that they provide. This is a unique opportunity for an individual interested in ethnography, oral history, or other qualitative research methods, to drive change and innovation in higher education.
Our organization and this role will provide you with an opportunity few others can offer, including:
- Conducting research that has a direct impact on individual academic institutions, publishers, content platforms, and scholarly societies.
- Examining scholarly, instructional, learning, and support practices that provide unique insight and generate rich discourse about higher education and academic libraries.
- Being part of a small and collegial team with strong methodological expertise and deep community engagement, with an opportunity to develop your research skills while learning about the policy issues and strategic dilemmas facing higher education today.
- Working with and learning from leading figures in applied anthropology and survey research for the higher education community.
You will work from our New York City office as part of a team that includes a senior anthropologist who leads qualitative research and consulting projects. Our team also includes a survey methodologist, who is responsible for survey design and analysis, a survey administrator, and an analyst. You will be working on projects that include these colleagues and others from Ithaka S+R. You will report to the director of our Library and Scholarly Communication program.
Specific Objectives and Responsibilities
There is strong interest in our anthropological projects, and you will contribute to multiple concurrent projects with ambitious deadlines. To start, you will work with a colleague who serves as project lead, but over time in this position you will be asked to manage projects through to high-quality, on-time completion. To be successful, you must bring to this position rich skills in gathering and analyzing information, interpreting analyzed data and writing reports, and project management.
Your primary responsibilities will be to:
- Conduct onsite research, including interviews of scholars, students, librarians, and publishers, as well as a variety of ethnographic and design research activities.
- Coordinate and manage project resources to ensure high-quality, on-time, and at-budget completion.
- Contribute to the design of data-gathering instruments, which may include interview protocols, spreadsheets, or survey instruments.
- Analyze data through textual analysis, the manipulation of spreadsheets, or statistical analysis.
- Provide logistical support for research efforts, such as managing institutional review board processes, coordinating randomized trials, collecting and maintaining datasets, arranging interview schedules, managing relationships with testing centers, and selecting and utilizing survey management and data analysis tools.
- Conduct desk research utilizing secondary research sources.
- Provide quality control support for written work, including proofreading and editing.
- Communicate findings and recommendations via written and oral presentations to staff and clients and at conferences and webinars.
- Represent Ithaka S+R at conferences, networking events, and client engagements.
- Contribute to proposal development and project planning.
- Maintain awareness of major community issues that may affect our projects.
- Travel to client sites and conferences for research, reporting, and representation purposes - approximately 10-15%
Challenges you’ll overcome
Some of our qualitative projects require site visits, and scheduling interviews within travel constraints will require that you exercise creativity and persistence.
Our projects use concepts and methods, such as participatory design and work-practice study, that may be unfamiliar, in which case you will need to learn about this type of work.
Your projects will be complex and several will be running simultaneously at any one time. You will be expected to take the initiative and assume leadership responsibility so that every project is completed successfully.
