Journal of American History

For over eighty years, the JAH has been the leading scholarly publication in the field of American history. A major resource for students, scholars, history educators, and public historians, it includes reviews of books, films, museum exhibits, and textbooks for teaching, as well as coverage of international scholarship on the United States. The American Historian

The American Historian is a quarterly magazine dedicated to the topics and issues vital to our members. It will cover the broad variety of needs and interests of our members, including primary and secondary teaching, professional development, archives and research, public history, digital history, and contemporary debates about the past. OAH Outlook

OAH Outlook: A Membership Newsletter of the Organization of American Historians, provides news of the organization and the history profession, as well as timely articles of professional and scholarly interest to OAH members. OAH Outlook appears quarterly each February, May, August, and November, and is an exclusive benefit of membership in the OAH.


The OAH Annual Meeting Program

Mailed to the membership each January, the OAH Annual Meeting Program includes information about the OAH Annual Meeting, held in the spring of each year. The meeting provides an opportunity to join colleagues for conversations on a broad range of issues, make professional contacts, and view the latest historical publications, products, and services in the Annual Meeting Exhibit Hall. The meeting also includes Focus on Teaching sessions and a series of professional development sessions for graduate students, as well as tours and off-site sessions.

OAH Online Member Directory

OAH Online Member Directory—Basic information (name, city and state, institution, fields of expertise) is listed in the Online Member Directory, allowing you to search for colleagues by areas of interest or location. This networking tool allows members to contact one another through a secure messaging system on the OAH Web site. The recipient's email address will not appear to the sender. To view the directory, please log in.


Recent Scholarship Online (RSO)

A rich, searchable database drawn from more than one thousand history-related journals, anthologies, and indexes, RSO will keep you up-to-date on new history books, articles, and dissertations.


One of our newest benefit of membership, the OAH Career COACH® Web site provides you with job listings in American history, career advice, interviews with individuals in history-related fields, as well as links to employment resources. In our newest addition, Kate Duttro, career adviser, has written a useful guide with job searching tips. Read Duttro’s latest piece and explore the OAH Career COACH® today.

The OAH Career Center allows members to confidentially post their resumes online and share them with potential employers in the field. Free to all active members, this service provides job seekers with easy to use online job application tools, automatic e-mail notifications of new positions, and the ability to manage their employment search by saving available job postings for later action.


Teaching Tools

Since 1907, the organization has been committed to excellence in teaching, from universities to precollegiate classrooms to museums. The OAH Magazine of History and OAH/NCHS Teaching Units encourage the use of primary sources in the classroom. “Teaching the JAH presents online tools to use the latest scholarly research in the Journal of American History in the U.S. survey course. OAH works on your behalf with foundations and other organizations to provide travel grants, professional development conferences, and other resources for history educators at all levels and in all settings.


OAH Magazine of History

Published quarterly between 1985 and 2013, each issue of the OAH Magazine of History focused on a theme in U.S. history. Articles drew upon recent scholarship, surveyed the historiography, and provided practical teaching strategies. Its goal was to enhance the teaching and presentation of U.S. history in secondary and college classrooms, as well as in public history settings. The OAH Magazine of History ceased publication with the October 2013 issue. Members may access the entire archive—all twenty-seven volumes—of the Magazine online. Individual Subscription to JSTOR

For $15, you also may choose an individual subscription to JSTOR, which provides full-text of the complete run of the Mississippi Valley Historical Review (1914-1964), and all issues, save for the last five years, of both the Journal of American History and the OAH Magazine of History. Subscriptions can be added at renewal for current members or on the member application form for new members or by calling the OAH business office at (812) 855-7311 between 8:00 and 5:00 eastern time.

Community College Humanities Association

American Council of Learned Societies Humanities E-Book offers unlimited access to nearly 4,300 full-text, cross-searchable titles across the humanities and social sciences from the 1880s through the present. Subscriptions cost $25, are valid for twelve months, and become active the month following purchase. Subscriptions run concurrent with the OAH membership year and cannot be added after October 31. Members who join after May 1 may purchase a subscription, which will become active in early November.
