FAQs

  • What is JPASS?

JPASS provides personal access to a specially selected digital library of journal content on JSTOR.
  • Who is JPASS for?

JPASS is for people who are enthusiastic about research in any number of fields, but who do not belong to a university or research organization with institutional access to JSTOR.
  • How do I know if my university or even my public library provides JSTOR access?

If you think you may already have access to JSTOR, you may search for your university or library using the Institution Finder. JPASS may give you access to more journals than those licensed by your institution or library.

  • What content can I access with JPASS?

JPASS includes the archives of the more than 1,600 journals listed in the JPASS Collection and is continually expanding to include new journals. The JPASS Collection represents a large portion of what is in the JSTOR digital library (approximately 84%), but not all of it. Content not in the JPASS Collection includes scholarly books, primary sources, current and more recent journal issues, and, in some cases, journal archives. If you come across this content in your use of JSTOR, please be aware that this content may be available for limited, free reading, for purchase as an individual article, or available through an interlibrary loan from a JSTOR participating library.
  • What does it mean for journal issues to be "archival"?

A journal's collection of archival issues is defined by each publisher according to a set number of years that must pass after an issue's publication. Most issues are added to the archival collection of a journal within three to five years of being published. The complete archival record is included for most journals on JSTOR, back to the first volume and issue.
  • How does the archiving process impact JPASS?

Because the archive of a journal necessarily grows to include more issues over time, a new year's worth of published content is added to most journals in the JPASS Collection each January.
  • How much can I read with JPASS?

You can read ALL the content in the JPASS Collection: full articles and book reviews, entire issues of journals, and decades of academic research.
  • When is new content added to the JPASS Collection?

The JPASS Collection may be updated over time to included new titles and publishers. The JPASS Collection title list is updated weekly to reflect any new additions.

  • How will I know when new content is added to the JPASS Collection?

We will send a regular communication notifying you of new additions to the JPASS Collection. To stay informed about the latest JPASS updates, we encourage you to confirm that you wish to receive JSTOR communications in your email preferences in the My Profile section of your MyJSTOR account.
  • Is content on JSTOR ever free to access?

Yes. Our Early Journal Content and Register & Read programs offer free read-only access to a limited set of content on JSTOR for individuals.

  • How many downloads do I have?

The JPASS downloads page displays the number of downloads in your plan, how many you've used, and how many you have left.
  • Where do I save my downloaded PDF copies of articles?

All of your PDF copies of articles are saved in your MyJSTOR account. They can be downloaded to your mobile device or desktop at any time.

  • Can I share my JPASS plan?

JPASS was designed with a single user in mind. We ask that you maintain the confidentiality of your MyJSTOR login information per the Terms and Conditions. If you belong to an institution that is interested in providing access to JSTOR, we are happy to review our multi-user access options with you or your librarian.
  • When will my JPASS access plan expire?

The 1-month plan expires 30 days after purchase. The 1-year plan expires 365 days after purchase. You can confirm the expiration date for your plan in the JPASS Downloads section of your MyJSTOR account.
  • If my JPASS access plan expires, will I still have access to the articles I downloaded?

  • If I upgrade, can I roll over my unused downloads?

For example, if you upgrade with 4 downloads left in your 1-month plan, they will be added to the 120 in your new plan. You will begin with a total of 124 downloads.
