PM Update: A warm Mother’s Day weekend with low rain chances; South Dakota faces snow

We declared spring over today, and so if this is the first weekend of summer, it fits the part. Highs both days should top 80, with moderate humidity. A few summer-like late day showers and storms could pop, especially Sunday as some moisture from Subtropical Storm Ana is drawn north.

Through Tonight: A pleasant evening temperature-wise and, despite a good deal of cloud cover, no rain concerns. Temperatures fall back into the 70s between about 7 and 9 p.m. Overnight, it remains mostly cloudy with areas of fog forming by morning. Lows range from the upper 50s in our cooler suburbs to 63-65 downtown. Light winds from the southeast.

Tomorrow (Saturday): Low clouds and fog are likely early in the morning, with skies brightening by mid-to-late morning. Partly sunny skies in the afternoon, with highs near 80 into the low 80s. There’s an outside (10-20 percent) chance of a brief shower or thundershower. Winds are from the southeast at around 10 mph.

Saturday night: Mostly cloudy and mild. Saturday evening temperatures slowly fall through the 70s after sunset. Overnight lows range from near 60 in our cooler suburbs to the mid-to-upper 60s downtown. Areas of fog are possible in the pre-dawn hours. Light winds.

Sunday (Mother’s Day): Some low clouds and fog are possible early but should burn off relatively quickly (faster than Saturday). The balance of the day features partly sunny skies with humidity levels becoming moderate (dew points near 65). In the afternoon and into the evening, there’s a 30 percent chance of showers and storms. Highs range from 80-85, with winds from the south around 5-10 mph.

Pollen: Tree counts have diminished quite a bit, down to 267 grains/cubic meter – which is HIGH, but down from 709 yesterday. Grass pollen is MODERATE-HIGH, while weed pollen and mold spore levels are LOW.

Mother’s Day SNOW! The storm predicted to trigger a severe weather outbreak in the Southern Plains Saturday and snow in the Mountain West may also produce a swath of heavy snow into western South Dakota. A winter storm warning has been hoisted for Rapid City and up to 12 to 24 inches could fall in the Black Hills, according to the National Weather Service. The heaviest snow is forecast Saturday night and Sunday, when wind gusts over 30 mph could lower visibility and cause some blowing and drifting snow.

Here’s the snowfall forecast from the GFS model but note these amounts are probably overdone at lower elevations since not all of this snow will stick given temperatures forecast to be above freezing at times:
