The derailment Tuesday appeared to be the worst railroad accident in the busy Northeast Corridor in many years. No cause was known immediately.

“It was pretty dark and extremely dusty with debris flying all over,” said former U.S. representative Patrick Murphy, who was in the train’s cafe car when it derailed.
