The first pilot club of education to citizenship and Human rights

opened, on Tuesday morning, November 27th, 2012 at about eight a.m, at the «Bab Khalid» primary school in the Mellassine neighbourhood.

Such inauguration which began after the Flag Greeting was attended by the Minister of Education Mr. Abdellatif Abid, representatives of members of the working group of the United Nations Bodies, a number of experts from the Arab Institute for Human Rights and a number of educators and parents.

This project was implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Education and in collaboration with six of the bodies of the United Nations as well as the Tunisian League for the Defense of Human Rights.

General framework:

The project of establishing «Civic Education and Human Rights Clubs», illustrates the Chapter III of the Agreement between the Ministry of Education and the Arab Institute for Human Rights in 2011; in which the two parties seek to set up a National Strategy for Citizenship Education. Such project that is implemented in collaboration with the Tunisian League for the Defense of Human Rights and six United Nations Agencies within the framework of the «Working Group for Citizenship Education» which the High Commissioner for Human Rights UNDP, UNESCO , the United Nations Fund for Population, the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and UNICEF; aimed to renew pedagogical process in the field of Citizenship Education within the school environment and to enable primary and secondary learners to get involved in public life at the local level.

Vision:

Transfer knowledge about democracy that is linked to the social context and spread the values and principles of Human Rights and Citizenship among educated youth, by using participatory pedagogy oriented to Citizenship Projects.

Expected Results:

Set up and activate twenty-four of Citizenship and Human Rights Clubs in seven Tunisian regions at the end of 2013, which will be able to develop completed citizenship projects by involved young people.

Objectives:

➢ Expand the participation of young people in public life through concrete Citizenship Projects achieved at school and in partnership with the actors in the local civil society.

➢ Reinforce the capacity of teachers in promoting the values of civil commitment to Human Rights in the school environment.

➢ Strengthen the relations between the educational institutions and various actors in the civil society.

Clubs Map according to regions:

The Project starts by setting up seven Pilot Clubs of Education to Citizenship and Human Rights Education in primary schools, junior high schools and high schools in seven different regions distributed over the entire territory of the Tunisian Republic.

They are as follows:

➢ Tunis district

➢ North-east

➢ North -west

➢ Mid-east

➢ Mid-west

➢ South-east

➢ South-west

Criteria for the selection of clubs:

A set of criteria were adopted for the selection of the institutions and the regions that embrace the Pilot Clubs; among them equity, social justice and social, economic and cultural fragility of the youth.

Drawing workshops in primary schools in the City of Tataouine; within the framework of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 63rd anniversary celebration.
