The text of the Message of the Arab Institute for Human Rights to the national and international Public Opinion on the occasion of Women's Day.

«The entire and effective equality means a victory for the Tunisian Revolution»

The Tunisian Revolution has stimulated many people from all social classes, all ages whether men or women since the outbreak of its first sparks. It has, therefore, drawn the attention of the world and even awakened the hope among other people from Egypt to the extreme point on earth.

Despite the divergence of the revolutionary movement paths in the region, they are unified not only in terms of starting points such as people's uprising against tyrannical and corrupted systems but also in terms of aspirations that is to say the desire for freedom, human dignity, equality and social justice ...

In fact, these starting points and aspirations may have unveiled the deeper dimensions of these revolutions, mainly the civil dimension which is based on labor, legal, social and feminist accumulations that have started since the reform movement in our countries .They have also unveiled the human dimension of their requests in terms of Interdependence between the merits of the revolution and Human Rights values and principles; in their universality, comprehensiveness and indivisibility.

The historical alignment of women and men to resist oppression, tyranny and social injustice, has shattered the false perceptions that claimed the notion of the inferiority of the Arab women. It has also refuted the claims underestimating the importance of woman and denied all attempts to frustrate and minimize her role in the construction, the development and the liberation of our societies. Thus, the stipulation for an entire equality between the two genders has been reinforced as recognition of the social, economic and political reality shaped by people in their struggles and revolutions.

In support of this scene that embellished the revolutionary process in Tunisia, Egypt and other countries, and on the basis of the mission of the Arab Institute for Human Rights to disseminate Human Rights culture and citizenship, as well as on the base of its juridical reference since its foundation, the Arab Institute for Human Rights indicated that the essence of each reform process passes inevitably through the recognition of the system of Human Rights in both their unity and integrity and that these rights remain hardly functional in the absence of the recognition and activation of the principle of equality.

This is, in fact, what has been confirmed by the Institute not only through training organizations and activists in all the Arab region but also across studies, research, seminars, forums and other programs. Moreover, The Arab Institute for Human Rights in collaboration with the rest of the components of the civil society in the region has contributed to constitutional, legislative, structural and institutional reforms through the submission of suggestions and offering visions and concepts which are able to address the issues of democratic transition from the perspective of Human Rights.

Indeed, all these activities were conducted in order to face the accurate requirements and the encountered risks of this stage. The most serious one could be the harm of the dignity of women, retreat their legal and social attainments and even doubt their Human Rights in terms of a very narrow understanding of the issue of cultural specificity and the tendency of an unequal distribution of resources to both the development of gender and between the regions.

In order to honor women in Tunisia, in the Arab world and in the entire world, the Arab Institute for Human Rights:

• Highlights the role of women in creating and encouraging the revolutionary movement on the path of democracy and freedom,

• expresses its absolute solidarity with Arab women who suffer from hard situations under authoritarian systems and armed conflict which expose their rights to serious violations ranging from killing, displacement, rape to violence and the hardships related to the asylum in Syria, Palestine and other countries... The Arab Institute for Human Rights also calls the Arab civil society to support the rights of Arab women and girls and to protect them from all forms of discrimination and abuse,

• confirms that the liberation of our people and the achievement of the requirements of their revolutions will be doomed to failure under any kind of banishment or exclusion of equality between women and men. He adds that such exclusion represents a denial of the essence of these revolutions and their merits which consist of Human Rights in their universality, comprehensiveness, interdependence, and unity as well as the rights of women as an integral part of these rights,

• stresses that Tunisian civil society sticks to gender equality as a basis for all constitutional, legal and institutional reforms conducted by our countries. He also considers the involvement of the Tunisian civil society and the support of national, Arab and international public opinion to «Tunisia Pact for rights and freedom» since it was launched on July 25th, 2012 and the demand to draft it in the Constitution and particularly its Chapter related to equality; is indeed a proof to the seriousness and the consensus related to the requirements as a way to achieve the progress and development of our societies,

• reminds the necessity of the Arab governments to assume their responsibility in order to adopt the international conventions on Human Rights especially those related to the women without any reservation, and the necessity to establish economic, social and cultural policies based on reducing social gaps and eliminating the feminization of poverty and all forms of marginalization, exclusion and vulnerability which women are suffering from,

• emphasizes the importance of devoting mechanisms, legal and constitutional guarantees to ensure the empowerment of women politically. The mechanism of parity in the elections of the Tunisian National Assembly on October 23rd, 2011 is considered as a proof and a model that should be preserved and reinforced with other mechanisms, as it offered women the opportunity to have access to the public concerns and the political sphere, as well as to have inspiration for other Arab constitutions such as the Moroccan constitution,

• and encourage all actors on the political, civil, economic and social levels to continue the revolutionary process and the path of reform, away from bargaining or manipulation of women's Rights and resisting all forms of undermining their dignity, especially violence against them in all its forms and its background, for the sake of achieving victory for our revolutions.
