An increasingly diverse array of software options is available to language teachers. This variety of options creates the potential for new directions in language teaching; however, selecting appropriate software and developing effective teaching methods that integrate this software can be time-consuming. This paper will introduce PowToon, cloud-based animation software that can be utilized in the language classroom. It will also explain in detail the application of this software in the author’s specific context, an intensive English for academic purposes program at Mahidol University International College in Thailand, where PowToon is used as a component of task-based learning (TBL). Used correctly, this software can enliven certain aspects of language learning. As a result, students’ technology skills and innate creativity can be tapped, leading to meaningful and memorable learning experiences.

One of  eight in the series, Emotions, Technology, and Digital Games taps into the vast emotions players experience during and after digital game play—enjoyment, excitement, anxiety, anger, frustration, among many others. The book demonstrates how to harness these emotions in practical ways such as designing video games for teaching and learning, creating tools to measure social and emotional development of children, determining how empathy-related thought processes affect ethical decision-making,and examining how the fictional world of gameplay can influence and shape real-life experiences.

Smith Systems Consulting

Word Count: 6,441 words = A+ work!
Includes Week 2, Week 3, Week 4, and Week 5 Combined

Background: Smith Consulting has received some feedback and concerns that their processes and procedures are not sufficiently documented.

This lack of professional documentation has caused some loss of potential contracts for the firm. The Learning Team has been given the assignment to define, develop, and propose the following standards for a software testing environment at Smith Consulting:
Define the Smith Consulting engagement approach. This will include a statement of the way the firm works with clients and how projects are managed.
Define the software development and quality assurance processes and procedures.
Describe in the detail the testing procedures to be exercised in the following areas:
Programs
Systems
Interfaces
Describe the infrastructure including hardware and software capabilities that will make up the software testing environment.
Define the format and requirements for development of formal program specification. This program specification is the document to be provided to the software developers working on a Smith development project.

The Learning Team will develop these standards over the duration of the course and submit a final 10-page paper and 7- to-10 slide PowerPoint Presentation with notes in Week Five.
Smith Consulting PowerPoint Presentation

Finalize work on the Microsoft PowerPoint slide presentation, updating it with new information based on all previous feedback. Include 10 to 12 slides with speaker notes.

The polymetal (Zn, Pb, Fe, Ca,Mg, Cd,Ba, Ni,Ti, and SiO2) complex Umm-Gheig carbonate ore is subjected to sintering treatment
at 573, 773, 973 and 1273K respectively for four hours. Chemical, spectral, X-ray and differential thermal analyses are applied for
the native ore as well as for the samples preheated and sintered. The current versus applied DC voltage (𝐼−−𝑉) characteristics, bulk
density (𝐷b), percent shrinkage (%𝑆), activation energy (𝐸a) and energy gap (𝐸g) are established for the sintered ore.The electrical
conductivity (𝜎), thermal conductivity (𝐾) and thermoelectric power coefficient (𝛼) have been investigated as a function of applied
temperature for the sintered ore materials. The electrical conduction is mainly achieved by free electrons near or in conduction
band or n-type. As the sintering temperature (𝑇s) increases the conduction of the ore is also increased due to the recombination
process taking place between the electrons and holes. Electrons hopping between Fe2+ and Fe3+ are the main charge carriers. The
formation of Fe3O4 at high sintering temperature acts as an active mineralizer, thus inducing an increased degree of crystallinity
and a more ordered crystal structure is produced.

The I-V characteristics, bulk density (Db), percent shrinkage (%S), activation energy (Ea) and energy gap (Eg) are established for the sintered ore. The electrical conductivity (), thermal conductivity (K) and thermoelectric power coefficient () have been investigated as a function of applied temperature for the sintered ore materials. The electrical and thermal measurements show that the sintered ore has semiconductivity behaviour with temperature. The electrical conduction is mainly achieved by electrons or n-type. Social scientists in Atlantic Canada developed an incisive political economy of the
region’s fisheries in the 1970s and 1980s and forged a sharp critique of Canadian fisheries
policies. Meanwhile, fisheries scientists generated a series of stock assessments which
substantially overestimated cod populations. After the collapse of the stocks in 1992, a
number of reflective postmortems have addressed the role of the social and natural
sciences in this resource failure. The present paper will attempt to construct a “political
ecology” of the crisis from this corpus, one which does not, a priori, privilege industrial
capitalism over cod ecology.

Sociologists have yet to theorize interactions with sonic materiality. In this article I
introduce an analytical concept for the observation of interactions with sound. Sound has
material effects in all situations. But the audibility of sonic objects is a relation of situated
actors to material arrangements. Sonic object settings are dynamic material arrangements in
which sonic qualities emerge for interpretation. The concept synthesizes research on sonic
materiality, audibility, and interaction. After outlining the concept, I present an empirical
illustration from an audio firm’s R&D laboratory arranged to support a new technology
called object-based audio. I observed engineers conducting two concurrent but contrasting
experiments; results indicate how settings both enable and constrain the interpretation of
sound.

This paper will explore how the way we read on the screen can
create new forms of collaborative writing online. With reference
to our ‘Twitter: Practice in Writing’ workshops in London 2014
and Vancouver 2015. As a younger generation move swiftly
from print to pixel, reading no longer becomes deliberate and
concentrated but rather a scan for information as our eyes follow
an F-shaped pattern. Screen-reading encourages rapid patternmaking,
provoking action, whereby words are merged with images.
From scroll to moveable type, will twitter ‘novels’ give rise to
twitter brains? How does it affect what we read and write? Has
this change been recognized in the publishing industry?

Across different kinds of modern influences on human sleep—from communication and media technologies, to medical interventions and chemicals used to modify sleep and wakefulness, to the organization of social life—some are seen as
interfering with human nature. Others, like many institutions, are accepted as natural. This is apparent in the example of school start times, which are widely assumed to be based on an agrarian past. Unlike modern media technologies, school start times are
often implicitly accepted as based in nature, and help constitute a sense of a historical primordial natural state in which humans lived in harmony with nature. The presumed naturalness of institutional times stands in opposition to modern media technologies and laboratory-derived chemicals, which are often criticized for being disruptive to our human natures and as having negative impacts on our sleep patterns. In some cases, technology may be serving as a distraction, interfering with a child’s sleep, but technology also provides an easy object of criticism, for physicians, scientists, and parents. In doing so, normative social expectations and the institutions that frame them escape criticism in the face of blaming the disorderly behavior of individuals.
