I'm excited to announce the launch of The Huffington Post's newest international edition, HuffPost Australia. The 15th edition in our growing global network, HuffPost Australia will be dedicated to producing great original reporting about the critical issues that Australians face, and to telling stories that focus on helping Australians live more fulfilling lives, while opening up our blogging platform to voices from all across the country. HuffPost Australia will also be a rich addition to HuffPost's What's Working editorial initiative as we highlight people who are bringing fresh solutions to the country's biggest problems. We can't wait to open up the conversation around everything Australia can teach the rest of the world about the solutions, innovations and acts of compassion that all too often are left out of the media's narrative.
We know women and older Australians are the two fastest-growing groups in the workforce. And that at the same time the future economy wants us to have more babies now, the government doesn't want to pay for maternity leave. Securing a spot in a decent childcare centre is like finding the golden goose.
Have you noticed how, the more Parliament works, the less you hear of it? There's no media circus, fewer press conferences, bytes, TV appearances, interviews. Rarely, when Parliament works, do you have primetime TV shows revolving around what's happening in the houses. Bills passed, questions asked and answered will find, at best, a cursory mention. At times, just a ticker.
I got my flow the night before the London Marathon and it was extremely painful. I went through my options. Running 26.2 miles (42.1km) with a wad of cotton material wedged between my legs just seemed so absurd. Plus they say chafing can be a real problem. I could definitely choose to participate in this norm at the expense of my own comfort and just deal with it quietly. But then I thought...
I think men and women are different but I also believe that they both equally human and should be allowed the freedom to make their own choices and live their own paths without being encumbered by what society expects from them. As a feminist, I don't think men and women are the same but I do think they are equal as human beings and should be afforded the same chances and opportunities that equality offers.
I believe Windows laptop manufacturers can take a page out of Motorola's guidebook to create a bang-for-the-buck, trustworthy model like the Moto G, instead of hiding some genuinely decent models within a clusterf**k of options that are hard to differentiate for an unsavvy customer.
It is deeply irresponsible of the NHRC to make a comparison between two vital social-justice issues and essentially dismiss one in favour of the other, especially when a failure to protect animals often results in a failure to protect humans, too.
HONG KONG -- Does the average app designer in Silicon Valley understand the cultural context of a 13-year-old Cambodian girl and the needs and wants of a billion others half a world away? This is a divergence that obscures a truth that technological cheerleaders rarely admit -- that proper investment in technology (in toilets rather than telecoms, for instance) has been deemed less important than searching for the massive valuation of a company whose social utility is marginal at best.
I had bought the cassette from a posh music store on Birhana Road in Kanpur on my 13th birthday. I had heard one of its songs on TV and had fallen in love with the poetry. Lucky for me, my birthday was close and I could arm-twist my uncle into buying it for me as a present. Thus came about my formal introduction with Gulzar, whose birthday happens to fall on August 18.
AMMAN -- Contrary to what Israel and U.S. Republicans are saying, the Iran nuclear agreement has eased rather than exacerbated the conflicts in the Middle East.
Bombast and appeals to nationalism make all the sense in the world as part of a campaign to recruit young people. However, the undeniably martial tone of the video, combined with references to blood and genes, will hardly contribute to China's efforts to dispel rising apprehensions about its future intentions.
Deliverance or calamity, recession-oriented or development-oriented, the "best possible agreement," or the "worst of them all," the new agreement between Athens and its creditors still has an uncertain fate and even more uncertain consequences.
I celebrate breastfeeding mothers everywhere. It's a tough and beautiful gig. I also celebrate those mothers who gave it a go and then made another choice -- because nothing is "best" for a baby if the mother is suffering.
Pakistan's role in Ashraf Ghani's victory in the presidential election last year had started the ball rolling towards a pro-Pak, anti-India, proxy government to deliberately scuttle India's attempt at strengthening its ties with Afghanistan. By keeping India away from the peace talks, Pakistan may gain strategic depth in Afghanistan, but will that ensure a safe and secure Afghanistan is the question.
Ebola may have faded from the headlines, but it hasn't gone away. We don't know how far away the finish line is, but we do know that to reach it, everyone involved in the response - both national and international - needs to channel all their energies into keeping up the momentum.
I meet him for a coffee at a second-world swanky café in the suburbs. He arrives, all nervous and a thousand apologies. I shake them off like I shake him off as soon as I meet him - stubbing my cigarette and my smile.
I was a happy person before I met my wife. But having her in my life gives it a whole new meaning - a new dimension of happiness that I cannot begin to describe. And with my little one added to the mix, I'm now happier than ever.
So you're working hard in the gym, eating right and getting plenty of sleep. The problem is, you aren't seeing results. Your hard work hasn't translated into lost inches or a drop in scale weight. What gives?
I'm no currency expert. But coming on the heels of a ham-handed intervention in the stock market, the abruptness of the depreciation seems to be an obvious short-term move to increase export competitiveness. More worryingly, it is also a tacit admission that China's leaders are very nervous.
