MDI launches Sahara multimedia platform "Dune voices"

After months of preparation, when the platform’s team was put together, the editorial lines agreed, the name voted on and the initial host countries selected, the new web platform, Dune Voices, was launched in Casablanca on December 13.  The platform, envisaged as a bridge between social and traditional media, the first of its kind in North Africa, will be furnished with video, audio and online stories produced by MDI-trained citizen journalists who live in the Sahara desert.

Media Diversity Institute launches its Programme Manager Vacancy

The Media Diversity Institute (MDI) is looking for an experienced and professional Programme Manager to run its Regional Programme which covers Morocco, Algeria, Mali, Libya and Mauritania. The Programme Manager is expected to oversee and implement all elements of MDI’s programme ‘‘Inclusive Voices for Conflict Prevention and Democracy Building in North Africa: bringing the voices of the Sahara into the public sphere”. The main goal of the programme is to set up and run an online news/feature agency with citizen journalists based in the Saharan region.

Algeria: Drop Charges Against Blogger

(Tunis) – Algerian authorities should release and drop all charges against a blogger arrested on charges of “glorification of terrorism” and “insulting state institutions.”

Abdelghani Aloui has been detained since September 15, 2013, after he shared photos and caricatures of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika on his Facebook page and criticized the president’s potential candidacy in the upcoming elections. Any attempt to criminalize peaceful criticism or even “insults” against public officials or institutions violates international standards on freedom of expression.
