The Zaki Hashem Memorial Fellowship in International and Comparative Law (LLM)
This fellowship honors the memory of Zaki Hashem (1920 - 2014), one of
Egypt’s great jurists who embodied the best values and achievements of the
Egyptian legal tradition. After completing his LLB at Cairo University, the
late Zaki Hashem went on to obtain an LLM and a PhD from Harvard University (1950). In 1953, he
founded Zaki Hashem & Partners. Throughout the second half of the twentieth
century, Hashem modeled in his law practice the highest standards
for professional excellence, and his firm helped usher a new era in how law
firms conducted business in Egypt. Throughout his long career he took on the
responsibility of many public positions including as a member in the Egyptian
Council of State, and as deputy legal counselor at the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. In 1972, he was appointed as
a cabinet minister in the Government of Egypt. Between 1981 and 1991, Hashem was the president of the Egyptian Society of International Law, and
remained its honorary president until his passing in 2014. His name will always
