Station overview

Cranwell was taken over from the Royal Navy by the RAF on its formation in 1918, for officer cadet training. On 5 Feb 1920 the RAF College opened to its first intake and it fulfils this role today as the world’s first air force college. Today RAFC Cranwell supports the flying task for No 3 Flying Training School (3FTS) which provides elementary flying training for pilots from the RAF, RN and Army using the Grob Tutors of Nos 16(R), 57(R), 115(R), 674(AAC) and 703(NAS) Sqns as well as advanced flying training for multi-engine pilots on the Beech King Air B200 aircraft of No 45(R) Sqn. No 45(R) Sqn also provides generic training for all RAF Weapon Systems Operators (WSOps) and advanced specialist training for those selected for the fixed wing Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) and Air Transport / Air to Air Refuelling (ATAAR) fleets. RAFC Cranwell also hosts HQ Central Flying School (CFS), Ground Training Squadron, General Service Training Squadron, RAF Recruiting and a unit of the Meteorological office. It is also the home to a broad range of lodger units including HQ Air Cadets, the Band of the RAF College and HQ No1 RAFP Wing. RAF Syerston (Nottinghamshire), home of the HQ for the RAF No 2 Flying Training School and Central Gliding School; RAF Woodvale (Merseyside); and RAF Barkston Heath, are satellite airfields under the command of the Commandant of RAFC Cranwell.
