HUSS IN THE SPOTLIGHT




For the first time in its history,
the International Studies Association (ISA) has awarded an Arab scholar, Bahgat Korany, professor of 
international relations and political economy at The American University
in Cairo (AUC) and director of the AUC Forum, the Global South 2015 Award, during the 56th annual convention
in New Orleans in March.

Korany earned his BA in 1961 from Cairo University, Egypt (with honors), his MA in international relations from the University
of Sussex, England (1966), a diploma in development studies (economics and sociology) from the Institute of
Development Studies in Geneva (1968),
and a PhD (political science) from the University of Geneva (1974).

Before joining the AUC faculty, Korany worked in the United Nations (European Office), from 1970 to 1974. He started
his academic career in 1970, first at the Graduate Institute of International Studies, Geneva (1970-74), then at the University
of Montreal (1974 to the present). He has been a visiting professor at the universities of Dakar, Laval, Carleton, Harvard (visiting scholar), McGill University, University of Algiers, Aix-Marseille, Oxford University
 and the Institut d'etudes Politiques (Paris). He is the founder and first director of the Interdisciplinary Program of Arab Studies and director of the Inter-University Consortium of Arab Studies, Canada.
He is also a founding member of the international organization of South-South Cooperatio
n (Beijing, April 1983).

Korany has authored more than 95 conference papers and was guest editor
to the special issues of three international journals, namely the International Political Science Review, Etudes Internationales, and Third World Quarterly. In addition, he has published three monographs, eight books, contributed chapters to about 24 other
books and approximately 40 articles
in such periodicals as International Social Science Journal, Journal of the Social Sciences, Annals of International Studies, Etudes Internationales, Revue Francaise de Science Politique, Peace Research Society Papers (Canada), International Journal of Middle East Studies, Third World Quarterly, Journal of Asian and African Studies, Third World Affairs Yearbook, and World Politics. His writings have been translated and published in Arabic, Spanish, Italian and Chinese.
