Our Mission

We're building an Open Science platform to bring the world's research online, available to all, for free. With over 26,417,899 registered users and growing at 10% per month, Academia.edu is rapidly transforming the way researchers share their work. We're a small team of 24 people passionate about building great software to open up science. Last year we raised $11 million from Khosla Ventures, Spark Capital, and True Ventures to fuel the growth of the platform and the team.

Academia.edu is disrupting the $10B 100-year old scientific publishing industry, accelerating the speed by which papers are peer reviewed and published. The site was launched in 2008 and as of March 2015 had over 20.4M registered users, with over 30M UVM who've uploaded over 5M articles. We're growing at over 60,000 new registrations per day.

We are 18-people strong and we're located 2 blocks from the Montgomery BART station in downtown.

Please watch my latest video, which explains why; it only takes 3:41. https://youtu.be/T4qLThgrTxE.

DEVOPS ENGINEER
Devops Engineer

is disrupting the $10B 100-year old scientific publishing industry, accelerating the speed by which papers are peer reviewed and published. The site was launched in 2008. Our site exploded from 2M registered users to over 22M registered users between mid-2013 and June 2015. Our registered user base will grow to over 60M in the next 12-18 months. Our stickiness quotient is greater than Twitter’s, resulting in over 30M UVM. We're growing at over 60,000 new registrations per day.

At Academia, we believe DevOps isn't a tool or a product. It's an approach to operations. By uniting development and operations teams to automate and standardize processes for infrastructure deployment, we get faster innovation, accelerated time to market, improved deployment quality, better operational efficiency, and more time to focus on our core business goals.

We believe continuously monitoring applications and environments iteratively improves code and processes. Constant improvement is central to DevOps, and we can't improve what we can't measure. And we believe treating infrastructure as code (using tools like ansible) helps make operations a seamless fabric.

We are currently hiring for a top tier Cloud/DevOps Engineer to join our Engineering team in our downtown office in San Francisco. The ideal candidate is an expert with AWS and who would have experience and or would be excited working with our technology stack: PosgreSQL, nginx, Redis, DynamoDB, Ruby on Rails, Ansible , and AWS.

What You'd Be Doing
  • Work with cutting edge technology in the cloud computing space. We use basically every service Amazon AWS offers and more. You’ll help us stitch it all together.
  • Improve our build and deployment processes and tools, and take our monitoring game to the next level.
  • Install, configure, update, and troubleshoot web services and applications. In addition to our own applications written in Python and Ruby.
  • Participate as a full member of the software engineering team, but bring a level of Linux and infrastructure expertise above what’s required for regular development.
  • Jump into a high growth startup environment.

Requirements
  • Solid CS fundamentals Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related major strongly preferred
  • 5-9+ years of Unix/Linux systems administration and development experience
  • Strong knowledge of web services architecture, and the ability to quickly learn new technologies
  • Proficiency with Ruby, Python, or other scripting language for automation and system administration
  • Experience building scalable infrastructure for high traffic websites
  • Ability to write code as an software engineer
  • Configuration management and service orchestration experience
  • Candidates with experience in AWS strongly preferred
  • Experience with large scale web clusters
