After the execution of the king, discontent remained within the
army, which had become a powerful political force - not least because
of the influence of the Levellers
, who were hostile to what they regarded as the new tyranny. Such
opposition to the republic culminated in an army mutiny, which was
savagely suppressed at Burford in May 1649. This pamphlet attacking
the Levellers was forced from the pen of one of the captured rebels
and published by the government.
