Riverton principal keeps promise, camps on school roof in sub-freezing temps

(KUTV) An elementary school principal settled in Thursday for a long, cold night.

Howard Griffith, principal of Foothills Elementary School in Riverton, camped out on the school roof, keeping a promise to his students.

The students raised more than $2,500 for new socks and shoes for needy children. Griffiths promised them if they did that, he would spend a night in the cold.

"I think it's really crazy," said student Maya Flores.

"I bet he has a heater in there somewhere," laughed student Kaylee Farnsworth.

By 8 p.m. Thursday, Griffith was still going strong.

"I think I watched a couple of YouTube videos already," he said, sitting on a sleeping mat in his pajamas.

He had plenty of snacks and, yes, even a heater.

He was allowed to go into the school, you know, when he needs to.

"Rather that than yellow snow on the roof," he said.

As Griffith got ready for bed, he said he's glad his spur-of-the-moment promise inspired his students to do something big.

"If it was the middle of spring, I don't know that the kids would have been motivated by that," he said.

Some of those kids who live near the school kept a close eye throughout the evening Thursday, making sure their principal kept his end of the bargain.

"I'm not going anywhere," Griffith said.

As temperatures sank into the balmy 20s, all that was left was for this fearless leader to get some shut eye.

The big question -- does he sleepwalk?

      "No," he said, laughing.

The principal planned to camp out until Friday morning and welcome his students to school -- waving from the roof.
