Facebook To End Private Gun Sales On Facebook And Instagram

Facebook will rely on users to report content that violates the new policy.

Facebook on Friday changed its policy to ban all private sales of guns through its platforms, said Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. Facebook will rely on users to report content that violates the new policy, Watts told Fast Company.

"In this country, we know that 40% of gun sales are through unlicensed dealers, without background checks," Watts said, noting that licensed dealers, such as Dick's Sporting Goods, would still be allowed to advertise guns on Facebook. She pointed out, however, that "licensed dealers don't sell on Facebook."

The new policy affects both Facebook and Instagram, which the company acquired in 2012.

In a statement to Reuters, Facebook’s head of product policy, Monika Bickert, said:

Over the last two years, more and more people have been using Facebook to discover products and to buy and sell things to one another. We are continuing to develop, test, and launch new products to make this experience even better for people and are updating our regulated goods policies to reflect this evolution.

Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America is part of the advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety, which received Fast Company's Innovation By Design award for graphic design in 2014.

Facebook is a pyramid scheme. I have 6 fake accounts. How many are those accounts FAKE? Still people and advertisers think it is a treasure trove of marketing. I see another crash coming in TECH STOCKS.

What Conservatives need to do is set up their own social media site and charge for it-$50 dollars a year. The advertisers will KNOW THAT EVERYBODY ON THAT SITE is legitimate.

Furthermore - anybody can say ANYTHING THEY WANT. They can offend insult, use the N word, whatever. Insult Muslims, insult Christians, ridicule the stupidity of Atheist (see DOstoevsky) - whatever you want.

    Facebook would become a joke.

You have freedom of speech boys and girls, not FREEDOM FROM OFFENSE.

Facebook can ban whatever it wants. The site is private property. it's just disappointing that their stated rationale is based on misconceptions, myths, and lies, one of them being that 40% of gun sales are conducted without a background check. Even the "fact checkers" at the Washington Post gave three Pinocchios to that one. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/fact-checker/wp/2015/10/16/clintons-claim-that-40-percent-of-guns-are-sold-at-gun-shows-and-over-the-internet/

Another one is that you can "sell guns over the Internet." All interstate sales must go through an FFL and get background checks. Nobody, even in a private intrastate sale, can sell a gun to anybody they know cannot legally own one. That is a serious federal felony; also a felony in many states.

More posturing and posing coming from the side that claims a monopoly on science and evidence.

Don't give that thing real information and keep your adblockers up to date.

Socialists still refuse to learn from History. If prohibition taught us one thing, it is that prohibition does not work. Digital speakeasies will spring up all over the internet or Facebook itself, guns will still be sold in accordance with State laws that govern face to face transactions. But the socialists need a paper trail for their utopia to come about. The one thing preventing the socialists from rounding up all the guns, is that there is no way to know where, and who has the all the guns. The socialists need a paper trail showing where all the guns are and who has them that only "Comprehensive Background Checks" can provide (despite multiple laws banning federal gun registries). The Socialists MUST disarm the commoners, fully redistributing wealth becomes dangerously ineffective while the people retain the ability to defend their property from arbitrary confiscation. When Facebook outlaws gun sales, I will be an outlaw. F that Communist Zuckerberg.

The NRA is telling the lie properly?

Any private sale of a firearm is a black market sale unless accompanied by a background check, unless that firearm is a muzzleloader.

  • Playrighter

The 40% figure is absurd: even the Washington Post gave it 3 Pinocchios. The figure comes from a half-baked phone survey done long before the background check system was even effectively working.

Obama, Biden, Bloomberg and others have taken heat for repeating this nonsense, and now Watts, fronting for the replacement for Bloomberg's disastrous "Mayors Against Illegal Guns" from which many mayors bolted, is repeating a statistic that any literate person should laugh at.

  • Lorin Chane Partain

well then Kudos to the black market. When socialists are in charge it's the only free market left.

  • jblank

That is 100% untrue! It is completely legal to sell a firearm to another individual, via a private sale, with no background check and has been that way since the founding of the nation. Learn your facts and your history, and stop lying!

  • eric

Another lie. Only someone in the business of selling firearms is required to conduct a background check. The federal government has no power to regulate private sales, and doesn't.

The American people are wise to the left's use ot he NRA as a boogeyman. In reality, it's rich billionaire with their own private security on one hand, donating to anti-gun causes, and grass root Americans on the other, fighting for their right to keep and bear arms.

Can we call them a socialist site instead of social site now? When is this considered an infringement on my civil rights? This is my speech, my property, my pursuit of happiness. Can I sue mark sucks a lot for this.

  • Henry Finn

I won't let you conduct a gun sale on my property either. Facebook is Zuckerbergs property. Why do you hate freedom? Go join Y'all Queda.

  • jblank

This is ANTI-freedom. It's removing the ability to sell a completely legal product.

  • Carefree Arizona

Facebook bans private gun sales but not murderous Islamist propaganda. Nice people.
