Lech Walesa has lost a legal action he took against a journalist for accusing him of being a communist collaborator, Polish Radio reported last Wednesday.
The Gdansk District Court said the judgement was based on the journalist’s right to freedom of expression and not on the historical truth of whether the former Solidarity leader, president of Poland and Nobel laureate in fact collaborated. In 2005, journalist Krzysztof Wyszkowski accused Walesa of working as a communist agent codenamed Bolek. Walesa sued, demanding an apology and damages, winning the first two cases but losing this appeal. His lawyer Ewelina Wolanska dismissed the verdict as “bizarre”.
