Established on May 19, 1899, The Illinois State Historical Society's mission is to promote the preservation, publication, teaching, understanding, and awareness of Illinois history. That mission is accomplished through its Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society, the popular history magazine Illinois Heritage, and other publications; as well as through its programs, including the annual Illinois History Symposium, the Centennial Awards, the Annual Tour, the Annual awards, scholarships, workshops, and an extensive historical markers initiative.
