Founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1740, the University of Pennsylvania continues its close relationship to entrepreneurs and inventors to this day. Ranked at No. 12 this year, UPenn is the alma matter of many self-made billionaires, most notably Warren Buffett, Elon Musk and Tory Burch. Since 1923, 25 Penn scholars have won the Nobel Prize. Today undergrads can choose from 107 majors at the university’s four schools or select dual-degree programs. Nearly one-third earn degrees in business/marketing or social sciences. The Ivy League school also has a 97% freshman-sophomore retention rate and a 5:1 student-faculty ratio. Just over half of freshmen receive school grants averaging over $37,000. Based in Philadelphia, students can take advantage of the city’s thriving cultural and startup scene while also joining one of the school's ample social, political and multicultural activities and organizations. This April, the university celebrated its 100th Hey Day, a tradition in which rising seniors march through campus with canes and brimmed hats to celebrate the start of their final year. The university competes in NCAA Division I-AA athletics, and its mascot is the Quaker. Franklin Field is the oldest collegiate football stadium still in use. More »
