Current activity

Lech Wałęsa continues his missions as an advocate for international and human solidarity. While traveling around the World he recalls Polish experience and bloodless struggle for freedom, peace and democracy. Since the end of his presidency he has visited dozens of countries, carrying the message of values and history of “Solidarity” and speaking about contemporary development of the globalizing World. During his foreign visits he works on building a positive image of Poland in the world, supports Polish emigrants and brakes negative stereotypes about Poland and Poles.

Lech Wałęsa is a symbol of transformation in Poland and Europe around the World. In his activities he supports many valuable projects, works for the cooperation of Laureates of the Nobel Peace Prize. He was an active member of the European Reflection Group which aim was to identify the challenges facing the ever-changing Union. He symbolically represented Europe during the opening ceremony of the 2002 Winter Olympics, carrying the Olympic flag together with representatives of other continents.

Lech Wałęsa supports human rights and works for democratization of societies. He remains in contact with dissidents in many countries ruled by dictatorships. His activity was recognized among other in 2009 when he was awarded the Ernst Reuter Medal, which is the highest distinction of the City of Berlin, given to individuals who have particularly committed themselves to the promotion of democracy and human rights. He personally established the award carrying his name, which is received by individuals or organizations working towards an agreement and joint cooperation of nations, freedom and respect for fundamental human rights. The Lech Wałęsa Award is a support for those who have the courage to fight for peaceful development of the world, stand against terror, and through their actions give hope and create opportunities for political and social changes.

He also established the “Lech Wałęsa Media Award” which recognizes journalists who create a positive image of Poland abroad, spread knowledge of its history, cultural heritage and contemporary life.

Lech Wałęsa participates with commitment in social and political life in the country, taking part in ceremonies commemorating the most important events in Poland. His active stance earned him an honorary citizenship of many cities, among others Warsaw, Kraków, Szczecin, Opole, Radom, Zielona Góra. He is also appreciated by the academic community each year receiving many titles of doctor honoris causa of universities in Poland and abroad.
