Touted as a new model, the hatchback has nothing much in common with Tata Bolt and Zest or even Tata Indica. The base however has been borrowed from Tata Indica, but apart from this, Tiago is an all new car wearing a new design language. From the looks of it, Tata Motors has worked really hard on this one making it the best looking car so far under its badge. The pictures of Tiago give a clear insight into the outer semblance hinting at a fresh approach. The treatment on the whole is contemporary unlike other Tata cars, up front sits the signature Tata grille boasting slight tweaks. The radiator grille meets neatly with the swept-back head lamps, although it isn’t a single unit, the head lamp cluster has been placed separately. Fog lamps are housed on the lower front grille. View from side is rather appealing, giving prominence to the sharp window line and creases at the bottom. Moreover, the gap between arches and wheels is balanced perfectly without making it appear awkward. Rear has also been given apt finishing touch featuring wrap-around tail lamps, an eminent integrated spoiler at the top of the hatch and sharp creases on the boot-lid.
Tata Tiago Interiors
Interiors too have been worked upon meticulously not just in terms of styling but the quality of plastic used is premium and there is enough room for occupants, especially for rear passengers. Storage space is generous within the cabin and features aboard include a responsive steering wheel borrowed from Zest and Bolt. A ConnectNext infotainment system along with other contemporary features like Aux-In, USB port and Bluetooth connectivity might be packed inside. Another significant feature likely to be seen inside is the smartphone-based navigation (exclusive to android users). Since Tiago is placed in the lower B segment, the hatchback may miss out on a touch-screen along with a couple of other features. Eminent safety equipment like ABS, EBD and dual front airbags may not be offered as standard across line-up (save for high end trims) to cut down on the Tiago price. Tata may also offer dealer-level customization options to the customer to spruce-up cabin.
Tata Tiago Engine and transmission
Under the engine hood of Tiago will sit new units of petrol and diesel powerplants, the petrol mill with a capacity of 1.2 litre has been hand-picked from the Tata Motors’ Revotron family of engines. Featuring three cylinders, the engine is built of aluminium backed by DOHC technology. Top power and torque output for the petrol engine is expected to be 83.8 Bhp and 114 Nm respectively. Diesel variants on the other hand are expected to employ a newly built 1.05 litre Revotorq powertrain. The 1.05 litre diesel engine is fundamentally a stripped down version of the 1405cc diesel powertrian seen in Indica. Unlike the original version, the low displacement diesel motor features just three cylinders. Built of aluminium, the DOHC powered diesel mill is tuned to generate maximum power of 69 Bhp along with 140 Nm of torque. A conventional five-speed manual gearbox will be synced to petrol and diesel units, Tata may introduce an AMT equipped version on petrol variants at a later stage followed by diesel variants.
Tata Tiago Expected price
The lower B segment is currently dominated by Hyundai Grand i10 and Maruti Suzuki Celerio with the AMT gearbox available exclusively on the latter. Hence a better designed and feature rich Tiago stands a great chance to overpower rivals in this division only if it is priced right. Therefore to undercut stern competition in the respective segment, Tata will have to price Tiago competitively in India. The expected price for the range starting variant is around under Rs 4 lakh, which is viable for buyers of lower B segment.
Tata Tiago Expected Launch Date
Tata Motors has announced the launch of Tiago to be on April 6, 2016. Stay tuned to CarAndBike.com for live updates from the launch event.
