Somewhat surprised that Derek France (Chester) and Julian Park (Redaing) are not on this for promoting social media in general and specifically with regard to fieldwork and promoting learning experiences with tablets and smartphones via HEA-funded Enhancement of Fieldwork Learning project

Hi Brian - we were only able to consider individuals who were nominated, either by themselves or someone else (see original post at https://www.jisc.ac.uk/blog/tell-us-who-the-most-influential-he-professionals-on-social-media-are-10-aug-2015).

We can't find a nomination for either Derek or Julian but please feel free to share any links or good practice here or by using the hashtag #jisc50social. Also, we are looking to make this an annual call so there will be another opportunity for nominations to be made next year.

Tom,

You have answered your own point there - you opened a competition in the middle of August (holiday season) and didn't get certain nominations - well there is a surprise! The first I knew of this was when the list came out otherwise I'd have nominated a few people. Not least Melissa Terras who is very conspicuous by her absence as is Mary Beard.

Great idea, will look forward to it running next year but if you want academics to engage then start it September and run until the end of October to get the best list of nominations possible.

Hi Simon - in terms of timing we were a little restricted by other scheduled activity. It's the first time we've run this call though and while we did receive a good number of nominations I fully take on board your comments about August not being ideal in terms of reaching everyone and will take this into account when planning next year's competition. Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks for putting the 50 all on one page; going against the (infuriating) contemporary culture of clicking through page-by-page for each one.

Isn't this a list of people using social media innovatively rather than a list of HE social media influencers? I'd love to see who the most influential HE staff and students are, or who has most followers, who is sparking debate etc

Hi Jennie, these individuals are who the judges considered most influential from the nominations that were received. They weren't looking specifically at follower numbers as such, as the view was that influence isn't necessarily measured by hard stats, but more at the impact and influence people had demonstrated within their institution and/or the wider community. The competition will run again next year with hopefully an even bigger pool of practitioners to select from!
