16 Egyptian Rights Groups Write to the High Commissioner on the Human Rights Situation in Egypt and Ask Him to Adopt their Recommendations

Yesterday, Wednesday, March 9, 16 Egyptian rights groups sent a letter to Zeid Ra’ad, the UN high commissioner for human rights, detailing the state of human rights in Egypt and presenting their recommendations for stopping its ongoing deterioration. The letter was sent hours before the high commissioner is scheduled to address the 31st session of the UN Human Rights Council, currently convened in Geneva, on March 10.

After a hearing at the European Parliament on the crisis of human rights in Egypt: Government refers CIHRS to investigation

Yesterday, the investigating judge in the NGO foreign funding case delegated a committee from the Ministry of Social Solidarity to visit the offices of the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS) in Cairo and look into its activities. While the committee refused to give the CIHRS administration a copy of the judge’s delegation order, the Institute was permitted to read it.

"Insulting the Ministry of Interior" is One of the Charges that Result in the Imprisonment of Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) and Activists

The ElRaml Appeal Misdemeanor Court issued a verdict on 31 May 2015 of imprisonment against women human rights defender (WHRD) and lawyer Mahienour El-Massry and other activists, namely Youssef Shaaban and Loay ElKahwagy, for 15 months in the case known as "ElRaml Police Station", for 3 charges including "insulting the Ministry of Interior".

Law on Terrorist Entities Allows Rights Groups and Political Parties to Be Designated Terrorists

The undersigned organizations condemn the passing of Law 8/2015 regulating designated terrorist and terrorism lists, issued by President Abd al-Fattah al-Sisi in his capacity as head of the executive and legislative authorities. The law preserves the same catastrophic legal provisions found in a previous bill drafted by the Legislative Reform Committee, also adding several overly broad terms in its definition of terrorist entities.

19 Rights Organizations Declare: A Dramatic Deterioration in the Status of Human Rights in Egypt over the Past Four Years

In preparation for Egypt’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) before the UN, scheduled for November 5, the Forum of Independent Egyptian Human Rights Organizations (the Forum), comprised of 19 organizations, published a joint report on the status of human rights in Egypt over the past four years. The report was sent to the UN Human Rights Council in March, the deadline for the submission of governmental and independent reports to be discussed during the UPR.

In a Comment on Protest Law, EIPR Demands Immediate Repeal of Law and Urges Courts to Refrain from Enforcing its Provisions

The Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights demanded the immediate repeal of the protest law as unconstitutional. It also urged courts to refrain from enforcing the law’s provisions, in a paper released today titled “A Law to Silence,” which offers commentary on the constitutionality of the law.
