Your Role

The Legal Intern will report directly to ITHAKA’s Counsel. This person also will support the work of Artstor’s products and services such as the Artstor Digital Library and Shared Shelf, and the products and services of the ITHAKA’s affiliate, JSTOR, Ithaka S+R, and Portico.

Specific Responsibilities

Responsibilities would include:

• Review and update Artstor’s licensing agreements;

Required Skills and Experience

• Bachelor’s Degree;
• Must have completed at least the first year of study at an ABA-accredited law school, and be currently enrolled in an accredited law school;
• Must have the legal right to work in the United States;

• Experience with copyright law;
• Ability to interface with, and gain the respect of, stakeholders at all levels and functions of the organization;
• Must be a self-starter and possess a strong work ethic;

Work Schedule

• We welcome applications from law students who can only intern on a part-time basis. Ideally, applicants should be available to intern from Artstor’s New York office for a time period of at least 12 weeks, for a minimum of 15 hours a week.  This is a paid position.

• Use SugarCRM to track and respond to support queries from librarians, faculty, students and independent researchers.

• Write and edit response templates, documentation for our internal Knowledge Base, and online help documentation to empower users to serve themselves.
• Regularly meet service standards for quality and responsiveness to a portion of the 50,000+ end user queries we answer every year.
• Stay up-to-date on the features and functionalities of a wide range of ITHAKA products and platforms.
• Frequently work with Support Services staff to enhance workflows and advocate for end users.

Your Role

As a Data Analyst, the problems you will work on include bringing insight into who our users are, how they are interacting with our websites, and how we can bring this data to bear in building the next generation of products at ITHAKA.  You will also work to help identify new growth opportunities, new business ideas, and trends that will help guide where to move our business. The data you will use includes billions of usage events spanning several years, tens of millions of pages of academic content, and many, many more data sources from across the business.

The successful candidate must establish and maintain positive professional relationships with consumers of analytics services spanning the organization (internally and externally) with diverse and evolving information needs. Primary Responsibilities

The Data Analyst’s responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to the following:

• Work with Product Teams to help identify analytics needs, help ensure essential data is captured, and assist them in interpreting data with the goal of improving our Key Performance Indicators.
• Apply statistical methods to help identify new opportunities for growth, new business opportunities, and trends through analysis of revenue and user behavior data.
• Mine usage data; analyze usage patterns and trends; provide strategic insights.
• Acquire data from primary or secondary data sources and maintain databases/data systems.
• Identify, analyze, and interpret trends or patterns in complex data sets to uncover new business opportunities.
• Identify opportunities and assist in the implementation automated production of routine datasets, reports, and other analytics deliverables using a variety of data retrieval and analysis tools, including Unix shell scripting, SQL, Python, R, Excel, and more.
• Demonstrate full accountability for delivering high-quality output, with a consistent focus on increasing the (internal and external) client’s ability to make empirically informed, data-driven decisions.
• Interpreting and effectively presenting findings to all levels of the organization; including ad hoc analysis for senior leaders.
• Partner with the Product Managers and Technology team to ensure proper tagging for all the brand sites and routine auditing of data to ensure completeness and accuracy.

Within an Agile framework, the Data Analyst will work with the Analytics team to manage a steady queue of information and analysis requests originating from across ITHAKA.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor degree in Data Science, Data Analytics, or Business Analytics.
• Strong capabilities using database query languages (SQL) and ability to perform some programming tasks are essential (Python, Java, R, and/or shell scripting would be desirable).
• Excellent analytical skills: ability to identify client information needs, design and execute quantitative approaches to meet them, and provide clear valuable information deliverables.
• Excellent quantitative analysis skills with a background in statistics a plus.
• Excellent writing skills.  The successful candidate must concisely delineate and clarify datasets, methods, and findings to internal clients, including senior managers and executives.
• Possess strong interpersonal relationship  and management skills; experience providing information services to clients, whether internal or external.
• Experience retrieving, processing, and analyzing data on Unix-like systems.
• Experience working with small teams in a dynamic work environment, continuously managing multiple tasks and clients simultaneously.
• Experience with data storage and warehousing using distributed systems such as Hadoop, HDFS, or Spark a plus.

Specific Responsibilities

Privacy Compliance

Serve as ITHAKA’s principle privacy manager, including:

• Maintaining, updating, and auditing the goals, policies, and procedures of ITHAKA’s privacy programs in accordance with applicable data privacy laws;
• Monitoring developments in international data privacy law, updating policies accordingly;
• Working with ITHAKA’s Information Technology Unit and other stakeholders to design and manage necessary tools and processes;
• Planning and directing internal privacy training programs and activities;
• Evaluating data-related incidents and guiding their resolution consistent with applicable law and best business practices;
• Managing consistent negotiation of data protection terms for commercial agreements and for internal clients;
• Managing EU next-generation Safe Harbor and Privacy Shield certification process;
• Providing legal support to internal units, including Human Resources, Information Technology, and Marketing regarding privacy, and providing legal counsel and oversight for policy related forms and agreements;
• Assist with managing outside counsel for privacy as necessary with the understanding that in-house expertise provided by the Associate will ensure reduced outside counsel costs for privacy and related matters.
• Advise ITHAKA’s Marketing and Communications unit on compliance with applicable domestic and international laws, regulations and best practices relating to advertising and marketing activities including CANSPAM and CASL compliance.
• Provide the services described above for Artstor.

Other Compliance

Ensure compliance with a wide range of applicable laws, regulations, and ITHAKA’s own high standards for quality and integrity;

• Take an active role in the maintenance, communication and enforcement of policies and procedures to ensure efficient and effective contract and business processes, and to reduce the organization’s legal and business risks;
• Maintain expertise and provide guidance on standards for accessibility in connection with serving the scholarly community and provide guidance to ITHAKA and Artstor staff regarding compliance requirements.

Product Development Support

As ITHAKA’s focus on technology-enabled products increases, the Associate Counsel will assist with establishing and maintaining a partnership between Legal and Product to provide legal input and direction throughout the product development lifecycle. This includes providing legal support for Labs, app and platform development. This work will necessitate a deep understanding of the product offerings and will entail advising on data privacy, open source licensing, and all other relevant legal issues that may arise in product development.

Anti-Piracy Activities

• Develop and contribute to the management policies and programs in the areas of copyright and piracy as well as coordinate with others inside the organization to implement and maintain those policies.
• Maintain awareness of piracy developments within the scholarly content environment and initiatives to counter them.
• As needed, lead or work with internal, cross-functional teams to develop and monitor ITHAKA’s anti-piracy measures and communicate abuse situations to appropriate ITHAKA staff.

Open Source Software Usage

• Develop and maintain expertise in license terms for open source software.
• Work with the Technology units of ITHAKA and Artstor to help track usage of open source software in projects.
• Provide guidance to ITHAKA and Artstor staff regarding compliance requirements for the use of open source software.

Contract Drafting and Negotiation

• Draft, review, and negotiate licensing, collaboration, and service agreements with parties in the U.S. and other countries;
• Guide internal clients on compliance with general contract terms. Provide legal support and advice for resolution of day-to-day matters related to contractual agreements, including requests to interpret or modify contract provisions;
• Review and analyze issues related to the organization’s licensing, end-user agreements, provision of services, and use of third party content. Ensure that necessary legal protections are contained in the organization's agreements, including applicable regulatory requirements, and that agreements appropriately address stakeholder needs.

• J.D. from an accredited law school.
• A minimum of four years prior hands-on experience with a major law firm or in-house firm, and experience in intellectual property and privacy law;
• CIPP/US Certification preferred;

Specific Objectives and Responsibilities

You will collaborate with potential clients, partners, and funders to develop new research initiatives and consulting projects. You will maintain close relationships in the communities we serve, convene groups to discuss their needs and our directions, and write proposals for various types of work (such as consulting and grant proposals). To be successful, you must possess well-developed instincts in designing research and consulting projects to suit the budget constraints and programmatic requirements of clients, partners, and funders. You will be equally fluent in Ithaka S+R’s strategy and the needs and opportunities of the communities we serve, and you will strengthen the connections between them.

You will also look forward to rolling up your sleeves to work directly on multiple concurrent research and consulting projects with ambitious deadlines focusing on the changing roles of academic libraries and scholarly publishers. You will be expected to hit the ground running to manage projects through to high-quality, on-time completion, sometimes paired with an analyst or other colleague/partner and sometimes working on your own. You will bring rich skills in gathering and analyzing information, interpreting analyzed data and writing reports, and coordinating project activities and resources.

Your primary responsibilities will be to:

• Conceptualize and design new areas of work and specific projects, successfully securing outside resources to support them;
• Establish and manage relationships broadly across our communities, including with potential project partners, clients, and funders;

Specific Objectives and Responsibilities

As a Product & Application Support Specialist, you will serve as a conduit between our external consumers (end-users, librarians, publishers, societies, and partners) and the Product Teams at ITHAKA. You will also serve as a technical liaison between the Website Support department and Product Teams, facilitating technical conversations to make connections with consumer impacts. You will serve as Tier 2 support personnel on behalf of all ITHAKA products and services, conducting investigations on behalf of developers and learning both the infrastructure and coding languages deployed by ITHAKA. You will be in a growth position, seeking to develop tools and processes to streamline routine tasks and to be able to triage, and even solve, some existing issues in the code itself.

Specific Objectives and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will have applicable web development experience, experience with large-scale distributed web applications, a high degree of intellectual curiosity, excellent problem-solving skills, and strong communication and interpersonal skills.  We look for candidates that possess strong debugging skills, a passion for best practices, and the ability to optimize code for clarity and reliability as well as performance.

The primary responsibilities of the Web App Developer are:

• Work closely with Product Owner and User Experience Designer to conduct Product Discovery using various testing methods including high and low fidelity prototypes, and live A/B testing.
• Interact with internal and external customers to understand needs and lead the development of web applications to meet those needs.
• Participate as a member of an agile team leveraging continuous deployment and test automation in order to deploy application changes to production on average of more than once per day.
• Implement rich, interactive web applications using the latest technologies, frameworks, and patterns.
• Leverage web analytics as needed to support Product Discovery and to measure project KPIs.
• Test, measure, and optimize front-end performance using Application Performance Management and Web Developer Tools.

Skills, Experience, and Characteristics

• Fluency in accessibility, usability, information architecture, and interaction design principles.
• Experience implementing responsive design interfaces targeted for tablets and mobile phones.
• Familiarity with SASS and Javascript including using technologies like Grunt/Gulp, Node.js, Handlebars and Angular JS.
• Familiarity with UI frameworks like Foundation and Bootstrap.
• Willingness and ability to learn new approaches and emerging technology.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Detail oriented.

The Senior Researcher will be the point-person for a set of experimental and quasi-experimental program evaluations, sophisticated qualitative studies, and research-based consulting projects. He or she will also provide expert guidance in research design and quantitative and qualitative analysis to all Educational Transformation projects that require it. Working from our New York office, the Senior Researcher will be a key leader within the Educational Transformation program—helping to shape the research agenda and managing our talented analysts on a project basis—and an integral member of the broader Ithaka S+R team. Our organization and this role will connect you with our wide network of higher education leaders and top researchers, will allow access to limited availability institutional sources of data, and give you the opportunity to own analytical projects that are both cutting edge and highly influential.

Specific Objectives and Responsibilities

Research and analysis

• Design and conduct mixed methods evaluations of higher education initiatives, including analyses based on attitudinal surveys, usage data, learning outcomes, and other sources.
• Manage relationships with partner organizations and collaborators.
• Oversee logistical aspects of research efforts, such as managing institutional review board processes, coordinating randomized trials, collecting and maintaining datasets, arranging interviews, and selecting and utilizing survey management and data analysis tools.
• Conduct desk research utilizing secondary sources to address key research questions and develop background on the subject and existing research.

Reporting and communications

• Design compelling mechanisms for tracking and presenting quantitative analysis.
• Communicate findings and recommendations via written and oral presentations to staff and clients and at conferences and webinars.
• Represent Ithaka S+R at conferences, networking events, and meetings with external partners.

Other

• Organize and participate in activities to generate project ideas and discuss project strategy.
• Work with the program director to develop proposals for potential projects and detailed plans for project work.
• Manage Ithaka S+R analysts in the context of project work.
• Maintain professional contacts and awareness of developments in disciplines and communities that may impact on our projects.
• Some travel required for research, reporting, and representation purposes – approximately 10-15%.

Challenges you’ll overcome 

We launched the Educational Transformation program in 2015, and it is vulnerable to the growing pains common to new organizations finding their way.  Much of the Senior Researcher’s work will involve developing new projects in new areas, but we will also look to take advantage of well-defined opportunities that become available to us.  The Senior Researcher will need to be comfortable with both delineating project boundaries and working within (and improving upon) boundaries set by someone else.               

Skills, Experience, and Characteristics

• Doctoral degree in a field including quantitative research methods training, with an excellent academic record.  
• Significant experience with appropriate statistical software (e.g., SAS, STATA, SPSS, R).
• Experience designing and managing experimental and quasi-experimental studies in education.
• Superior writing and proofreading skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrated ability to translate research data into compelling analysis and accessible well-written reports and engaging presentations.
• Demonstrated leadership ability, including experience managing others on research projects. 
• Ability to prioritize and manage multiple assignments concurrently, perform well under pressure, and meet deadlines, while ensuring acute attention to detail and accuracy.
• Intellectual curiosity, especially with an interest in education policy.
• Ability to work in our open, collaborative, team-oriented culture.
