Your Role

The Legal Intern will report directly to ITHAKA’s Counsel. This person also will support the work of Artstor’s products and services such as the Artstor Digital Library and Shared Shelf, and the products and services of the ITHAKA’s affiliate, JSTOR, Ithaka S+R, and Portico.

Specific Responsibilities

Responsibilities would include:

• Review and update Artstor’s licensing agreements;
• Review marketing and promotional materials;
• Provide research and other assistance on various projects as needed;
• Assist legal team in day to day tasks. 

Required Skills and Experience

• Bachelor’s Degree;
• Must have completed at least the first year of study at an ABA-accredited law school, and be currently enrolled in an accredited law school;
• Must have the legal right to work in the United States;
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and sound judgment with the ability and interest in thinking strategically;
• Experience with copyright law;
• Ability to interface with, and gain the respect of, stakeholders at all levels and functions of the organization;
• Must be a self-starter and possess a strong work ethic;
• An interest in the nonprofit sector is strongly preferred;
• Must be able to provide a legal writing sample upon request. 

Work Schedule

• We welcome applications from law students who can only intern on a part-time basis. Ideally, applicants should be available to intern from Artstor’s New York office for a time period of at least 12 weeks, for a minimum of 15 hours a week.  This is a paid position.

User experience is a critical discipline at JSTOR, one of the world’s leading academic databases. You are able to weave design into the DNA of our lean/agile processes. You understand which UX/Design principles to employ for the production of projects that delight users and reach the target audience. You have enough programming prowess to know what’s feasible across all interactive platforms and how to lead a team of user experience and design staff to ensure high-quality execution.

Your days might include the following:

• Implementing UX changes based on the work of the User research team;
• Collaborating with designers to develop a visual vocabulary for content types with different access rights;
• Partnering with the analytics team to frame the correct questions to analyze and improve JSTOR users’ workflow on the platform;
• Contributing to an effort to redesign the onboarding experience for individual versus institutional users.
• Deliverables include user experience design for full web products, microsites, online advertising, marketing and social media initiatives, video, mobile apps, events and conferences.

Collaboration from inception makes for a better product, and your team will be connected with business and development from the start. Accordingly, this position and your team is based in Ann Arbor, which is also home to our team of over 90 professionals working in product management, engineering, development operations and user services.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• In alignment with the Creative Director, define the UX/Design goals while working closely with the Product Management, Product Development, Quality Assurance and User Research teams to execute in an agile environment.
• Manage and lead the UX/Design team to create intuitive, smart designs that inform and delight our users across all media and products.
• Partner with our VP of Product to align UX/Design vision and activities with the JSTOR brand and business goals.
• Continually improve research, design, and development processes to gain efficiency, remove obstacles, and simplify problems.
• Ensure that the organization, through close collaboration with the Senior Product Managers, uses data and evidence, not opinions, to drive the product development process.
• Manage creative process and teams including schedules, deliverables, and team utilization to deliver outstanding interactive visual products.
• Lead the development and execution of assets ranging from creative concepts and pattern libraries.
• Ensure UX approaches are compliant with JSTOR’s online accessibility policies.
• Ensure the usefulness, usability, consistency, brand relevance, and functionality of the finished product aligns with organizational strategy and all the ITHAKA brands.
• Assess, coach, develop and empower staff to support their success in a customer-centered product organization.
• Manage departmental budgets, including financial forecasts, resource prioritization, day-to-day monitoring of progress and return on investment.
• Ensure smooth alignment among all parts of the organization through effective communication.

Requirements

• Demonstrated success overseeing the UX design of engaging, useful, coherent products that engage and delight users.
• Experience representing an organization or product brand across media.
• Superb creative, organizational, and interpersonal skills -- sharing and listening to a diversity of viewpoints.
• Vision: the ability to generate ideas for new products, services, and features.
• Minimum of 7 years relevant experience in UX for mobile and web, solving a broad range of UX design problems.
• Experience in developing new product concepts, and taking them from initial concepts to successfully deployed products.
• Experience in designing for accessibility, ensuring adequate access to information through assistive technologies.
• Experience making evidence-based decisions that meet organizational objectives; in particular, leveraging user research and usability testing to facilitate application within design decisions.
• Experience managing successfully in a matrixed environment, with proven ability to build and maintain great working relationships; help others achieve their goals across all levels and departments of an organization.
• Strong project management skills; demonstrated ability to work and lead independently.
• Fluency with common design software (e.g., Adobe Creative Cloud/CS, OmniGraffle, etc.).
• Knowledge of HTML, CSS, and Front End Design (prototyping skills are a plus).
• Experience with Dual-Track Agile processes; experience at the intersection of lean UX/Agile welcome.
• Excellent oral, written, and group presentation communication skills.
• Occasional travel (<10%) may be required.

Your Role

You will have overall responsibility for the impact and culture of design, both visually and functionally, on user perception and experience with all of ITHAKA’s brands. You will operate in a matrixed environment; for example, you will have designers and user experience specialists supporting the various product lines with reporting responsibility to you while having dotted line responsibility to the Vice President for Product and direct accountability to their product teams. 

Your days might include the following: putting together a creative brief and identity system for the brands; formalizing a creative and conceptual framework for product design; developing interface and interaction guidelines that reinforce the ITHAKA brand perspective; working alongside an engineer or technology architect to test and refine a new product feature; building a multi-channel design strategy playing out across direct email marketing, events, advertising and public-facing websites; working with a business-line managing director and marketing lead to develop a strategy for improving awareness of key product attributes; and overseeing collateral workflow in support of events. You must be a visionary, energetic, deadline-driven person who loves to work as part of a team to make great things happen – and in this role, you must lead by example. Design lives and dies through execution, and your close partnership with the Product team, in particular, will advance the culture of design at ITHAKA.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

You are an established design professional who understands web-based products and services and is passionate about delivering creative value in service of organizational goals. You have vision, leadership, creativity, an analytical mind, a user-centered orientation, and a positive outlook that inspires those around you. 

You will:

• Establish, direct, and guide a living brand experience for ITHAKA and its related brands, reporting through Marketing, and working closely with the VPs of Product and Communications.
• Set the creative strategy and direction that provides the framework for a sustainable brand infrastructure that can support marketing, communications, and other outreach teams.
• Set the creative strategy and direction that provides the framework for a sustainable product design infrastructure that can support evolution in the visual, tonal, and interactive aspects of ITHAKA’s new and existing products.
• Facilitate and build a culture of design within ITHAKA through internal strategic initiatives, mentoring of designers (including hands-on exercises) and user experience professionals, and finding new forms of overlap between visual design, content development, technology, and experience. Work in conjunction with human resources and internal communications to manifest this culture in ITHAKA’s physical environments.
• Successfully integrate user experience and design into an iterative product development process that reveals user needs through experimentation and analysis of evidence.
• Engage the wider design community to build a positive reputation for ITHAKA to attract passionate and talented individuals to help ITHAKA’s cause.
• Lead, facilitate, and ensure the successful and timely completion of major projects requiring content creation, design, and execution for ITHAKA’s analog and digital properties that support the goals and KPIs of our organization and product lines.
• Manage and ensure that projects are completed on time and within budget.

Requirements

• Minimum 10 years of experience in design related positions, with some of that experience coming in the not-for-profit, higher education sector.

Specific Objectives and Responsibilities

Your responsibilities may include, but will not be limited to the following:

• Maintaining the storage systems and servers of the internal and public services such that the services have greater than 99.9% uptime.
• Installing and maintaining storage and operating systems software to include but not limited to Linux, UNIX and Windows platforms.
• Performing preventative maintenance and tuning of the storage systems, HNAS systems, and fiber switches.
• Configuring the operating systems and making file system modifications as it pertains to the attached storage.
• Working with the network administrator to maintain a secure network on the managed hosts.
• Providing on-call support of ITHAKA environments storage support.
• Working with technical staff to successfully anticipate future capacity needs.
• Managing both internal and external storage environments (SAN, HNAS, and fiber switching units).
• Defining and providing performance metrics.
• Working with senior management and technical staff to successfully anticipate future capacity needs.
• Managing vendor relations as needed.

Challenges You’ll Overcome

• Aid in the design and implementation of technical solutions for both internal and external business functions. This may include new hardware and software tools to support this growing entity.
• Continue maintenance cycles in order to maintain our current support agreements with hardware and software vendors.
• Develop and grow ITHAKA’s security awareness in the IT arena through tool / solution research, and selection process.
• Identify, develop, and refine procedures and processes to continuously improve the operations of the IT organization with manageable, scalable standards and best practices.

Skills, Experience, and Characteristics

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience, education/training, etc.
• 6+ years of hands on experience as a Storage and UNIX systems administrator.
• Strong understanding of multiple operating systems (UNIX, Linux, and Windows) installation and configuration.
• Strong understanding of VMware.
• Experience installing third-party software.
• Must have prior experience managing large NAS and SAN disk space, working with clustering technologies.
• Experience with configuration and management of fiber switches.
• Proven ability to perform installation, upgrades, and patch installations to operating systems.
• Experience with Sun Enterprise server hardware, Cisco UCS, Dell Hardware RedHat or other versions of Linux, Java Application Servers, Oracle and Enterprise Backup Systems are highly desirable.
• Familiarity with high availability data solutions and replication techniques.
• Ability to take on major projects, working within a cohesive team producing successful results.
• The candidate must be comfortable managing multiple projects and day-to-day activities.
• The candidate is expected to work closely with a multi-location, multi-discipline team and should have previous experience using both technology and communication skills to overcome the distances between locations.
• The successful candidate will be a creative professional who can work both independently and in a team environment.

The Senior Researcher will be the point-person for a set of experimental and quasi-experimental program evaluations, sophisticated qualitative studies, and research-based consulting projects. He or she will also provide expert guidance in research design and quantitative and qualitative analysis to all Educational Transformation projects that require it. Working from our New York office, the Senior Researcher will be a key leader within the Educational Transformation program—helping to shape the research agenda and managing our talented analysts on a project basis—and an integral member of the broader Ithaka S+R team. Our organization and this role will connect you with our wide network of higher education leaders and top researchers, will allow access to limited availability institutional sources of data, and give you the opportunity to own analytical projects that are both cutting edge and highly influential.

Specific Objectives and Responsibilities

Research and analysis

• Design and conduct mixed methods evaluations of higher education initiatives, including analyses based on attitudinal surveys, usage data, learning outcomes, and other sources.
• Manage relationships with partner organizations and collaborators.
• Oversee logistical aspects of research efforts, such as managing institutional review board processes, coordinating randomized trials, collecting and maintaining datasets, arranging interviews, and selecting and utilizing survey management and data analysis tools.
• Conduct desk research utilizing secondary sources to address key research questions and develop background on the subject and existing research.

Reporting and communications

• Design compelling mechanisms for tracking and presenting quantitative analysis.
• Communicate findings and recommendations via written and oral presentations to staff and clients and at conferences and webinars.
• Represent Ithaka S+R at conferences, networking events, and meetings with external partners.

Other

• Organize and participate in activities to generate project ideas and discuss project strategy.
• Work with the program director to develop proposals for potential projects and detailed plans for project work.
• Manage Ithaka S+R analysts in the context of project work.
• Maintain professional contacts and awareness of developments in disciplines and communities that may impact on our projects.
• Some travel required for research, reporting, and representation purposes – approximately 10-15%.

Challenges you’ll overcome 

We launched the Educational Transformation program in 2015, and it is vulnerable to the growing pains common to new organizations finding their way.  Much of the Senior Researcher’s work will involve developing new projects in new areas, but we will also look to take advantage of well-defined opportunities that become available to us.  The Senior Researcher will need to be comfortable with both delineating project boundaries and working within (and improving upon) boundaries set by someone else.

• Doctoral degree in a field including quantitative research methods training, with an excellent academic record.  
• Significant experience with appropriate statistical software (e.g., SAS, STATA, SPSS, R).
